Misery sure does love company and this week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries was no exception. An eternity of misery was what Damon promised Stefan in the pilot episode of the series. Over the seasons Damon turned over a new leaf but it seems he has finally succumb to his dark nature this season.
Continuing to do Sybil’s bidding, Damon heads to Texas for Sybil’s next victim. He douses a mechanic at a garage named Lou in gasoline and makes him conduct electricity and set himself on fire after he does not disclose Peter Maxwell’s (Damon’s true target) location. Turns out Damon is looking for a Maxwell family heirloom. Peter returns after his co-worker has charred and Damon demands Peter turn over the heirloom. He tries to compel him but much to his surprise good ‘ole Pete has been unknowingly vervained via a watch given to him by his son.
More surprises unravel for Damon as he learns Matt is Peter’s son. That’s why Pete looked so familiar. Anyway, angered by Peter’s inability to find the heirloom Damon stabs him. Luckily Matt comes to his father’s rescue and knocks Damon out. He then tells Dear Old Dad to drink Damon’s blood in order to heal his wound. Matt then ties up Damon and tortures him to get him to talk. We then learn Damon only injured Tyler and hasn’t killed him yet. He is bleeding in a park and go off of I-20. Matt leaves Damon behind goes off to save Tyler with his father.
Matt tells his father the truth about everything, supernatural creatures and all, on their ride to find Tyler. Unfortunately they are too late; Matt discovers a dead Tyler. He breaks down and his father consoles him.
Back at the garage, Damon forces a tool rack on himself in order to break free of his restraints. He finds the heirloom he was looking for and heads back to Sybil who has been keeping Alaric and Stefan busy all episode.
In this episode we learn the misery Sybil suffered at the hands of her family, both chosen and blood. Sybil tells Alaric and Stefan the story of Arcadius (Cade), the first psychic. He was stoned and burned at the stake because of the fear of other villagers. Cade got his final revenge on the villagers in death. He created hell with a psychic blast so powerful that it created its own world. Sybil then dives into her back story. She was exiled from her Mediterranean village because of her psychic abilities. A girl from the island becomes her sister as they both share the same psychic abilities. The two would lure sailors to their death and take their food and other previsions as they would wash up on shore. Sybil later learned that there were no previsions just sailors.
Turns out Sybil’s sister is still living and is very, very close by. She has been for a while now. Unfortunately before Stefan or Alaric can get an answer they are attacked by Georgie. Georgie vervains Stefan and traps Alaric in the tunnel system. Ric has to make himself blind and stabs his ear drums to make himself deaf in order to escape the tunnels. He ultimately escapes and comes out in the town square.
The same place where Georgie meets her end at the hands of Sybil’s sister aka Seline!!!!!!! Georgie was forced to attack both Stefan and Ric because Seline wanted her to rescue Sybil. Unfortunately Sybil wants nothing to do with her sister. Seline disappointed in Georgie’s persuasion skills as well as her sister, kills Georgie for failing at her mission. Moments later Georgie wakes up in hell and watches as Seline devours her body. She is then whisked away in the same fashion as Katherine was.
In his vervained state, Stefan is given even more insight as to who Sybil is and why she became who she became. She enters his mind with her memories. We learn Seline forced this life on her just as Stefan forced Damon into the vampire lifestyle.
She then goes on to show Stefan how she tried to kill herself but Arcadius came to her rescue. Seline made a deal with Cade; immortality, beauty and youth in exchange for serving their new master. Sybil tells Stefan there is no escape. The stain of his sins will always remain on his soul no matter how much he atones. This is why Damon chose to serve Cade for all eternity rather than suffer. Sybil tells Stefan he will too. That Cade is the answer to his problems. If he wants to help Damon all he has to do is kill the devil aka Cade. Is Cade the true “big bad” of this season? What misery awaits our heroes? Why does Sybil want Cade dead? Does that action set her free?
