“Listen to the kids bro!”

It’s been almost two whole years since Kanye West uttered that infamous phrase during his acceptance speech at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards. Yet, in the grand scheme of the musical landscape, it’s felt so much longer. The reason? Hip-Hop’s mainstream has gotten a complete make-over. It seems as if ever since Ye mentioned those words, melody > lyrics has been the wave. Just look at the artists over the past year who have generated the most press and you’ll see names like Lil’ Yachty, Lil’ Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti and more dominating those conversations.

The reason? The kids, bro… & the kids told us on Twitter that Las Vegas reps Lil’ Knight and Lil’ Koat are next up, practically begging for their new track, “She Understands” featuring Vegas’ resident Teen King, Le$LaFlame. Well kids, here it is.

Set to the tune of a beautifully distorted flute — actually it might be a recorder? — by producer Locks, the song follows a similar pattern that most of today’s popular tracks have adopted: flows, hoes and more flows. The twist in this one is the chemistry between the three artists. The trio seamlessly bounce off one another to give off cadences that sound effortless, but would leave you sounding silly attempting to try on your own.

Hip-Hop is a chameleon’s game. The ability to reinvent yourself in this industry has long been an overlooked skill, and to good reason. In a genre where, “keeping it real” holds more weight than being yourself – ironic, isn’t it? – having the capacity to seamlessly switch from one trend to the next will allow you to eat forever, or make you a social media punchline. But what about those who have already made the switch coming in? What about those artists who had different life plans before the music gods chose them as next up? Former Las Vegas basketball standout Le$LaFlame is one of those artists, and he checks in to the RESPECT. Mag pages for the first time with the new video for his infectious single, “Helicopter”.

Utilizing an old military hangar in Las Vegas, Le$ showcases not only the “choppers” surrounding him and his boys, but also gives us a taste of the melodic flow that has had him buzzing in circles all through the west coast. I’ll be the first to admit, at first listen I wasn’t a fan of the guy. Listening to his older tracks, I had seen more Lil’ Uzi Vert than I did Le$LaFlame. Let’s be honest, though, many of today’s biggest artists have started out emulating their idols, so I chose to monitor his progress. I noticed the first step of his evolution during the release of his newest project, Evo, but the visual for “Helicopter” solidified me as a fan. Le$ sounded a lot more in pocket with his flow, his bars were better and the man was oozing with confidence, making it hard for anybody not to jig to this catchy track at least a little. With over 11K followers on Soundcloud, 10K on YouTube coupled with his own merchandising brand in, De$igner Gang, I imagine that many of you won’t be too far behind on the bandwagon.
