Georgia is scorching hot right now. No, I’m not talking about the weather, but in a way I’m still referring to the climate. The climate of Hip-Hop, that is. With established acts like Future, Gucci Mane and more carrying serious weight in the industry, it’s also paved the way for newer cats like Reese LAFLARE, Sahbabii and more to burst through the congested scene for some shine–but that’s Atlanta. In Athens, the history is a bit more thin, musically, but that isn’t stopping native Kenny Malik, who turns in his infectious new R&B track, “Myself.”
Sticking to theme given away in the title, Malik spends the majority of this record trying to figure out things within. He shows insecurity when he refers to thinking about his partner’s past relationships, as well as denouncing his detractors with easy-to-singalong-to bridges that provide context to his obviously scattered brain. Though Malik is fairly new — this is his first post on RESPECT. — the potential is evident and the songwriting prowess shines through at different times throughout the song.
Check out, “Myself” below and be sure to get familiar with Kenny Malik.
