There could many ways to put this, ways more euphemistic and pleasing to the ear–but I’d rather keep it a buck. Black women have been getting the short end of the stick in music, and life in general, for decades. While some of the most timeless music has been made from queens such as Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, Mary J. Blige and more, it’s not until door-busters like Beyonce did we start to see the top 1% of the industry being forced to recognize. Now, artists like Cardi B are the toast of the town and lyricists like Rapsody are being mentioned among the top rappers in the game, regardless of sex.
Though it may be far fetched, the aforementioned women have held it down so that those that come after could hopefully surpass what they’ve done. Artists like Noname, SZA and others have taken the torch and ran with It, and looking to be next in the line of black women displaying ownership in music is North Las Vegas native, Wicked B. The singer/songwriter checks into the RESPECT. pages for the first time with her brutally transparent track, “Honesty.”
Sticking to a somber tone that could be mistaken for a nonchalant attitude, Wicked’s words paint a different picture. The Sin City native croons over ambient drum kicks and a smooth melody that make for an easy listen sonically, but a retrospective one lyrically. Coming in off of her slept on project, Diaries of Yolanda, “Honesty” is one of a few gems from the tape that showcase a distinct versatility from Wicked. Though It’ll be easier to box her into the Hip-Hop realm due to her appearance and cadence on some records, the budding artist takes steps forward musically on tracks like, “Come As You Are” & “Luv.”
Check out, “Honesty” below and be sure to check out Diaries of Yolanda, which is out on Soundcloud now.
