A common analogy throughout the storied history of Hip-Hop has been rappers likening themselves to animals who sit atop of the food chain. Some examples would be lions, tigers, bears and even vultures; but perhaps none has been used more than the Shark comparison. If you dissect the lyrics of your favorite rapper, there’s a 99% that at some point, they spit a line about the great blue sea, specifically with him (or her) cast as the predator of the ocean. For as many times as we’ve heard it, you’d think we’d be chomping at the bit for some new comparisons (nobody wants to be a dragon???); but that’s not true. It’s especially not the case with the fan-base of Connecticut native, Witt Lowry who checks in with his catchy new ode to killing the competition, “Blood In The Water.”
Meshing sobering, but scathing lyrics like, “You ‘met’ with the label, took a few pics–I see your facade,” with catchy hook structures like the chorus, Lowry seems to have found a formula that suits his strengths. Instead of getting caught up in either the “mumble” rap phenomenon or the “lyrical miracle” rout; Lowry in turn takes some of the better elements of both, creating a fresh new sound catered to him. With the impending release of his full-length album, I Could Not Plan This, set to take place September 22nd along with a 34-city headlining tour, it seems like Witt Lowry might be a face to get familiar with.
Check out, “Blood In The Water” below and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for 9/22.
