Four years ago, Jay-Z released the album Magna Carta Holy Grail on Independence Day. He initially marketed the project to Samsung users exclusively; those users were able to download the album via a special app. It was also promoted in various commercials with Samsung. Four days later, it was released out to other music platforms. As a result of the Samsung deal, this album went Platinum upon its release — this was met with much debate thanks to outdated rules in regards to album sales. Despite the resistance, the album debuted at number 1 on Billboard in its first week with over half of a million (post-Samsumg) copies.
It had three hit singles off of the album: “Holy Grail” (featuring Justin Timberlake), “Tom Ford,” and “Part II (On The Run)” (featuring Beyoncé). There was a Magna Carter World Tour that followed afterward.
