Dunkirk is Christopher Nolan’s (The Dark Night, Inception) newest project. Written and directed by the master himself, Dunkirk depicts the dramatic and true story of the Dunkirk evacuations from a war torn beach and harbor in France, following the seemingly doomed plight of allied soldiers in World War II. As the enemy forces close in it seems the troops have nowhere to go, but help is at hand and a fierce battle ensues.
Nolan seems to have captured the frightening true story from the looks of the trailer. For those that have never heard of Dunkirk here is a quick history lesson: In May 1940, the Allies faced a dire scenario. The only escape from Hitler’s blitzkrieg for the nearly 400,000 soldiers stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk, France, was across the English Channel. Over the course of eight days, the vast majority of troops were rescued.
The film stars Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises), Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Inception), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) and Harry Styles from One Direction. Dunkirk is set to release in the summer of 2017.
In the first moments of the trailer we get a glimpse of the action-packed adventure devised from the mind of Nolan as soldiers are picked off by German soldiers via air attack. We are then greeted by a clip where the men are surrounded by the enemy their ships are ambushed. Later on we see Cillian Murphy’s character escape and makes it to his father’s boat. His father turns the boat back around and heads to Dunkirk. “There is no hiding from this son. We have a job to do.” Cillian tells him that if they go back they will die. They still head back.
Another clip shows a young officer being shot in the face. Other soldiers in his platoon are forced to cover his mouth and muffle his screams so that he doesn’t blow their cover.
Toward the end of the trailer we get a glimpse at Hardy’s character. It looks like he is a German soldier who is bombing the unit of British Empire, French and Belgian soldiers.
This film has the makings of another Nolan blockbuster hit. Don’t believe me? Check out the trailer for yourself:
