Before I knew the person behind “Wat U Mean,” I ignorantly assumed it was just another viral sensation capitalizing off his audience on social media. The song is catchy enough where I found myself doing whatever new dance moves could be associated with the production. That changed when I was invited to attend Electric Circus’ “Player’s Ball,” hosting a listening session powered by record label, 300 Entertainment, featuring recording artist Dae Dae at the exclusive SOHO House. The party comes days before the release of his new project The DefAinition in collaboration with Atlanta’s super producer, London on da Track.
As I checked in at the front desk, excitement filled the air as I headed to the 6th floor. I recognized some familiar faces and was reassured this event wouldn’t be a disappointment. Circling around to get a sense of the space and the crowd, I immediately hit the bar to exercise my legal rights as a citizen. And to my surprise, it was an open bar, which is definitely a notable gesture from the party host. Unaware of Dae Dae’s set time, the energy in the room is occupied by chatter and music provided by Kitty Cash and Shy Daughter. Again, another bonus point for having female DJ’s mc the night.

Kevin Liles introduced Dae Dae to the crowd stating “we gon’ spend that sh*t on black culture, we gon spend that sh*t on us,” demanding he “better turn this sh*t down, right now!” Dae Dae jumped right into his lead single, “Spend It,” instantly having the fans reciting the lyrics word for word. His stage presence was captivating as he was dressed in all black, accessorized with black leather gloves, and his stylized Harley Quinn-esque dreadlocks swung as he bounced around on stage. Keeping up with the momentum of the night, he followed up with “Dead A** Wrong.” He performed a few new songs from the 11-track collaborative project and ended with a special DJ set by London on da Track. If I wasn’t convinced already about Dae Dae’s rise to fame, then the collaborative effort between Electric Circus and 300 ENT proved I should reconsider. Everything about the event was well executed and the only night cap I need is to stream this project November 4th adding Dae Dae to my southern repertoire.
