Frank Ocean stormed out of a shroud of obscurity and silence a little while ago, releasing his visual album, Endless, then his second studio album, Blonde, a few days later. The very bare instrumentation feels like nostalgic memories that you’re reliving in song form. Some say that part of the reason he was capable of making such an album was his distance from social media and people; an act which clearly played a part in his dissolving relationship with his label, Def Jam.
According to AP, an anonymous source close to the situation at hand spoke of Frank Ocean’s relationship with Def Jam like a “bad marriage.”
““He didn’t want to be on a label…. He wanted to do his own thing.”
The label decided to end Frank Ocean’s contract ahead of time, due to it’s acidic nature. That said, Ocean’s Endless wasn’t actually the album that fulfilled Ocean’s contract.
Frank Ocean had the freedom of releasing Blonde entirely independent; an action which most are using as a symbol for the forthcoming “war” on both streaming services and music labels, considering the markets of music streaming is becoming more ubiquitous by the day.
