On August 24, 2016, Laker fans gathered around their City Council as they announce Kobe Bryant day to honor his 20 years playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. The day is significant due to the numbers that he retired, being 8 and 24 (8/24). Laker Nation chanted “Kobe Bryant” and “M.V.P” in front of the building as they signed the legal document recognizing him for generations to come. Fans outside of California may believe that this day is not necessary for the legend and that he does not deserve a day to himself. However, most die hard Laker fans do not think the same way. After watching Kobe Bryant play for practically all of my life, my personal conclusion is that he absolutely deserves a day.
I’ve watched Kobe play in purple and gold for a long time. Being a LeBron James fan, I was a loyal Kobe Bryant hater. I wanted to watch him lose in every finals he went to. That’s where the greatness of Kobe is shown. When you root against a player and watch him destroy any team he plays against, he is proving to the world that he is nothing less than a legend. The killer mentality that Kobe possesses in his DNA shows his grit. Bryant is a five time NBA champion, and performed well in all of his finals. He has an MVP award, is a two time Finals MVP, 18 time All-Star, four time All-Star MVP, and a two time scoring champion.
Watching a player like Kobe Bryant over the years has annoyed me to no extent. However, everyone must accept the fact that Kobe Bryant is nothing less than spectacular. With the accolades that he has, it is difficult to argue why he doesn’t deserve a day to himself. Legendary players deserve legendary praise upon their retirement. This seems like it is the beginning of Bryant’s celebration.
