Calvin Klein’s new video ads host an “evolved cast of talent,” in this case including rapper Young Thug. In his 20 second showcase he said some things that not a lot people in media are saying yet:
“In my world, of course, it don’t matter. You could be a gangster with a dress, you could be a gangster with baggy pants. I feel like there’s no such thing as gender”
While the idea that the gender binary is a social construct is not a new one, an article from Fusion pointed out last September that it is perhaps surprising that someone from the hip-hop world is addressing the topic. Hypermasculinity has not been a problem solely connected to the hip-hop world, not by a long shot, but it is still a clear and present issue in today’s world in both the media and in more immediate life situations. Anyone that breaks away from that mold tends to be scrutinized, as shown by Fusion’s article of Young Thug.
As Complex puts it, there have been many leaps and bounds in recent years for the hip-hop world breaking out of a certain stereotypical mold, and Young Thug is adding even more to this breakthrough by sharing his belief that there is no gender. Hopefully this will help continue the normalization of progressive themes in not only the music industry but in the world at large as well.
