While Beyoncé hasn’t been one to be associated with controversy, she is no stranger to being talked about amongst the crowd. Whether it’s Illuminati allegations, debating the content of the lyrics on her sixth studio album LEMONADE or conversations of what is going on inside and out of the Carter household, Beyoncé haters will find something to talk about. This week, after the kickoff of her Formation World Tour, Beyoncé made her haters job much easier by selling “BOYCOTT BEYONCÉ” merchandise at the stops of the tour.
Since the debut of the controversial single (depending on who you ask) “Formation,” Beyoncé has been fueling her haters with topics for their conversations. While many people appreciate “Formation” as a powerful track that empowers women to slay on haters by any means necessary, many people were not and still are not pleased with the political content. And alleged “anti-police” sentiments in the visual for the track or her Super Bowl performing paying homage to the Black Panthers Movement. Beyoncé has been receiving a lot of flack over the last few months about potentially using political themes in her music as a marketing tool to boost album and tour ticket sales.
Shortly after the release of “Formation” and the 2016 Super Bowl half-time performance, police forces in major cities such as Miami and New York City, called for Beyonce boycotts for depicting police in a negative light. Police felt that the visual for “Formation” depicted the police badly when she showed herself sitting on a sinking police patrol car and other images related to the Black Lives Matter movement came up on the screen. In a CNN interview, former New York City mayor, Rudy Giuliani criticized Beyoncé’s “Formation“ video stating that she should use her platform to advocate fans “to respect the uniform, not to make it appear as if they are the enemy.”
Beyoncé said it herself, “your best revenge is your paper” and what better way to get revenge on Beyoncé haters by selling “Boycott Beyoncé” merchandise at her own concert. A “BOYCOTT BEYONCÉ” t-shirt will run you about $45 while a iPhone case will run you about $25 but either way, Beyoncé is having the last laugh.
