It has been eight years since the legendary Pimp C passed away. The UGK rapper’s death was unexpected and tragic but his passing has not stopped his memory from living on. One of the most important lyricists in rap, it’s nothing but right that he is honored in every way possible.
Complex and Mass Appeal teamed up to put together Long Live the Pimp, a documentary about Pimp C’s life and legacy. The 27 minute documentary has snippets from Bun B, Nas, DJ Mike, Rico Wade, Chinara Butler (Pimp C’s wife) and more.
Here are a few things that Bun B and DJ DMD had to say about Pimp C, according to Complex:
“I understood that he was destined for something great,” Bun B states. “I was just like, you know what, I know I’m alright with this music shit, he real good with this music shit, I’ma hold my nigga down and see how far we can get.”
“The whole city cried that day,” says DJ DMD, producer and childhood friend of Pimp C. “When you lose someone like Pimp C, you lose a cultural bulletproof vest,” adds Bun B. “You lose somebody that was actually willing to stand up and take the bullet for the culture, that was willing to be honest and say the things that maybe people were afraid to say or that people didn’t want to hear.”
The Marcus A. Clarke-directed documentary is something that all UGK and rap fans should check out! Watch it below and tell us what you think of Long Live the Pimp.
