When a television network goes through management changes it usually fails at generating excitement, unless that change is historical and involves a beautiful black woman. Channing Dungey has been in many headlines lately as she becomes the first African-American woman to run a broadcast network. According to the New York Times, she is replacing her “valued mentor and friend” Paul Lee, who forcibly resigned in order for Dungey to take over the position. This is not only a special moment for Channing, her family, ABC Entertainment, but to African-Americans as a whole. It is a bold and impactful move for ABC.
In light of all the negativity around racial tensions that has been gaining traction in recent months, it’s refreshing to see that progress is still being made in the African-American community. Channing’s new position is not only an astounding accomplishment for African-American’s but a historical feat for women as well. There are many ethnic individuals who are qualified to to fill leadership positions but never get the opportunity. With her work on shows such as: Scandal and Once Upon a Time, Channing deserved to have this opportunity, possibly even a standing ovation! There is a good chance that she’s had to endure a countless amount of obstacles just to get her foot in the door. But once she was in, she made a valiant effort to make sure that her presence was felt and left an impression. The timing of the whole situation couldn’t have been any better. What better way to commemorate Black History Month than to appoint a black woman as the head of a major television network? This may have been a mere marketing strategy by ABC, or not. The one thing that we know for sure is that the result is incredible!
Paul Lee deserves an abundance of credit for his tenacious drive toward making ABC a more diverse network by adding shows such as: How to Get Away With Murder and Blackish. There’s no way anyone could take away from what he has done for the network, but wouldn’t it be more appealing if the push toward diversity was delivered by someone with a diverse background themselves? This may or may not have been a factor in the decision to go with Channing Dungey as the new head of entertainment for ABC. Though we may never know the real reasoning behind it, we are all on the edge of our seats waiting to see what she does next!
