The little skit at the beginning of this video serves as a proper analogy to the rest of it: NY up-and-comers YC The Cynic and Otis Clapp are chilling together, and Otis starts a little run of frat-humor: “I gave her the D, the Dick Vitale, the Dick Clark.” YC shakes his head. For the next three minutes, the two go back and forth similarly, with Otis offering brutish, grimy dude-raps, and YC offering the other side of the coin with some dazzling wordplay, imagery and intricate flows. Before saying that YC simply “Renegaded” Kendrick’d Otis, consider that there’s something here for everyone. You can party to Otis, and vibe to and learn from YC.
Interestingly at the 3:40 mark, the video detours to catch up to the title; we find a lonely Otis mourning his relationship with “Fiona.” The best part? Somehow the hyper beat that so perfectly fit the back-n-forth setting of moments before has been transformed, but not entirely swapped, to fit the change in mood. Check out “Fiona” below.
