Melissa McCarthy‘s character in The Boss is essentially Presidential candidate-era Trump, in a dress. In the age of feminism and anti-bullying,The Boss is over the top and her degrading character can be a bit MUCH. McCarthy portrays Michelle Darnell and the story line centers around a rich to penniless scenario that normally an audience would feel sympathy for. That’s NOT this movie.
When we first meet Michelle Darnell in an orphanage, her lack of a consistent family presence turns her into a money-hungry, back-stabbing corporate executive. She makes enemies with Kathy Bates who plays Ida Marquette, Darnell’s former mentor and Peter Dinklage, known as Renault in the film. Side Note: Dinklage is hilarious outside of Game of Thrones!
It’s an okay movie but here is where it loses it for me: McCarthy’s LONG, drawn-out cursing and suggestive banter in the presence of the film’s many child co-stars. (In her defense, male comedians have done worse on film and stage for decades.) What redeems McCarthy’s character are the moments she connects with the girls in her troop. These exchanges almost make her human.
With all of that said, her ability to make us care for the rich b***h of the film was effortless! From her known physical comedy to the limited, yet array, heart-warming scenes that put a pretty bow at the closing nearly had me in tears. There are cringe-worthy scenes; please be fore-warned that this is NOT a kids movie just because children were casted. We think you’ll enjoy this film though so definitely take some time to check it out!
