Lifetime says goodbye to made-for-TV movies and other programs about women in situations such as kidnapping, prostitution, abusive relationships and more.
The network is looking to break the mold and rebrand themselves with new original content from some of the biggest names to hit the spotlight.
UFC fighter, Ronda Rousey is just one of those names. Deadline reports that Rousey has signed a three-picture movie deal to bring stories that reflect her passions about empowerment to the screen.” It’s a great move on Rousey’s behalf as she looks to add more credits to her breakout roles in Hollywood. It began with 2014’s The Expendables 3, while her most recent project was the movie rendition of HBO’s Entourage.
In addition to Rousey’s trio of movies, Lifetime has other projects in the works with singer-actress, Selena Gomez, tennis star, Serena Williams and Janet Jackson.
Gomez will executive produce a scripted drama series based on her life with Kevin Spacey (House of Cards). As weird as it sounds for Spacey to collaborate with Gomez on a project about her life story, the series may be worth watching as Spacey breathes life into something completely opposite from House of Cards.
Williams is set to produce a movie “Inspired by the annual dance-off she hosts with sister Venus” under the working title, Sister Dance.
Jackson’s project will follow the real-life story of the 1920s mobster, Queenie, the only female crime boss active during the prohibition-era.
The network has finally recognized their viewership has changed and they are in charge, representing a new era. Executive VP, Liz Gateley disclosed with The Hollywood Reporter that “Women in peril” are being traded for a new “fempire.”
