“This was shot for a piece on Ad-Rock’s break into the world of acting for the New York Times. My editor wanted me to shoot him in a playground to play on the fact that he is notoriously kid-less yet plays a hipster dad in “While We’re Young.” I was nervous that we were going to get in trouble with the parents the park since there are many signs you need to be accompanied by kids to be in the gated area, but it seemed like all the moms knew who he was and no one said a thing as Adam slid down the slides, climbed the Jungle Jim or climbed up all the ladders with all of their kids.”

Rick Rubin Goes Back In Time To His NYU Dorm Room Where Def Jam Began

Recently, Def Jam celebrated its 30th anniversary in the world of Hip-Hop. Founder/producer Rick Rubin teamed up with Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons to create a label that set the standard for artist repertoire and for commercial success.

Like the saying goes, big things come in small packages. Rubin began scheming on what came to be the greatest Hip-Hop label of all time in a tiny NYU dorm room. In Rick Was Here, Rubin tells us about the parties he used to throw in his old dorm room, and having legendary industry people such as Adam Horovitz from The Beastie Boys pick out records in his dorm room. Fresh Out the Box: Hip-Hop Playing Cards

Got Spades on the Brain? DJ Sarasa and Asami One have found the cure. Last month the self-proclaimed producers and designers of the Tokyo-based B-Girl lifestyle brand, Mynority Classics, recently blessed poker fiends and card sharks alike with a new brand of hip-hop-inspired playing cards. Whether you’re into high stakes gambling or old fashioned fun, these cards are perfect for any rap junkies looking for a new way to indulge in hip-hop culture.

Japanese painter Sayori Wada used traditional Japanese calligraphy pens to hand drawn each card individually. The cards feature iconic faces from the golden age of hip-hop like Biz Markie, Busta Rhymes, Big L, and J Dilla, and are remarkable for their keen sense of detail. Trios like Run DMC, and The Beastie Boys embellish the three of hearts and three of diamonds, while royalty like Queen Latifah and 45King hold it down for the face cards. The back of the hands are also skillfully illustrated with Wada’s own collection of Japanese brush pens in the ressemblance of 90’s cassette tapes.
