Anthony Lister is currently invading the walls of Miami, Florida. The artist has achieved the rank of “A Lister” thanks to his original use of paint in order to create movement. “A” not only represents his excellency but also his status as an adventurer. The Australian-born painter travels between universes, from superheros to dancers. Lister was given the tabloid treatment and featured in the premier-issue of the avant-gardiste, fine-art publication Tally Ho! His artistic identity is captivating. In his work, he reveals the “spirituality” and shines the light on the “heritage” of Western popular culture. He takes this joint legacy and shapes it into something alluring and grotesque, a perfect representation of the society he seeks to depict.

“[I like] making things out of scribbles. I actually don’t really even call [my work] drawing. I call it shapeshing. I kind of just push shapes around,” he says. “Art as a whole can be unpredictable. It takes a confident artist to admit that what lead the greatness of his piece was an accident which are often viewed as problems and not as potential opportunities to change the route a piece was taking. In Japan the word opportunity and problem are the same word. So I’m far more interested in problem creation than problem solution.”

Anthony Lister‘s work captures a moment, as if the artist and his characters come together in harmony once they hit the canvas. “I just know the energies that I want to be paying attention to. Bob Dylan in an interview with Time Magazine said, “it’s not my job, it’s not my job to do” you know “it’s gonna happen fast and I can’t explain it”. That was cool. As artists go, Francis Bacon [one of his influences] had some cool opinions, especially when he was drunk. He really said some bold things that were accurate and that everyone else was afraid to say. I was turned on to him by an artist called Brett Whitley who was an Australian artist who did the whole party art thing well before my time. You know, Rembrandt, Egon Schiele, [and many more].”

Meet Fintan Switzer, an Irish street artist. He challenges the art of street-portraiture by merging his traditional style to the urban world. “After years of painting rather conventional portraits, I wanted to try something new. Considering many of my favorite artists have worked on the street, I figured it was worth a try,” he explains. Switzer‘s recent works, such as “Webcam Wars”, “Waltz With The Philistine”, “Post Oppression Depression,” are about conflict and revolution.

The viewer can see within his murals the contrast between his old style and his freeing personality. Contemporary street art meets traditional technique. The artist conveys extremely strong political messages. It is always interesting to see the perspective of street artists from different origins and backgrounds on international affairs. Switzer‘s murals are quite similar to Conor Harrington who also uses the drops of paint to create a fading movement in his works. Conor Harrington will be featured in an upcoming magazine: Tally Ho!

Look out for this man.

Photographer Phil Knott has a novel idea: collect today’s emerging and established fine artists under one banner, and present their work in an accessible format. The result is Tally Ho!, a new magazine that aims to “reinvent the art publication and foster the next generation of art lovers and critics.” Combining new-school art with old-school newspaper stock, Tally Ho! wants to give today’s artistic talent a tried-and-true platform to express themselves to a wider audience. To launch their debut issue, they’ve started a Kickstarter page which promises awesome prizes for each level of donation. Check it out and read more about Tally Ho! below:

THE PURPOSE AND MISSION Tally Ho! is meant to inspire, refresh, surprise, trigger thoughts and engage ideas, both in the public’s realm and at a commercial level.

POSITIONING Aware of the cultural style landscapes that we are immersed in today, Tally Ho! niches itself in the intersection between tradition and edge: Old-fashioned newspaper stock and name, plus an arousing philosophy, are mixed with artful visuals produced by a select group of today’s artists. The result: timeless and always relevant.

TONE & STYLE Fast-forward, fearless, mischievous, naughty, like an unruly child, honest, always well-intentioned, passionate, great-looking, self-confident. Tally Ho! is a communication tool replete with independent creative content that comes from a non-dictated, free-willed “self” of artists, as opposed to being trend driven. In a neo-romantic way, Tally Ho! is a proclamation and a protest of the human soul. This generates an outcome that is full of social and aesthetic meanings.
