Jhene Aiko finds herself on a day long outing with her significant other in her video for “Spotless Mind.” The couple spend their day playing arcade games, painting on the beach, and joyriding. This date is nothing but average however. Aiko takes the lyrics, “Shame on me for changing, no no no, shame on you for staying the same” very seriously, as she showcases different versions of herself  throughout the. Grammy nominated, Jhene Aiko, who is best known for enlightening the people through her art, turned it up a notch with her latest video, “Wading”. The sensual visual, which is filled with private dancers, martial arts and a SWAT team is not just about showing skin and a playing off the oversexualized image female artists tend to project these days. Christian hip-hop artist, Lecrae, grabbed the number one spot this week on the Billboard 200 chart. It was a tight race between his album, Anomaly, and Jhene Aiko’s debut album, Souled Out. However, Anomaly managed to surpass its competition after moving 88,299 units. Souled Out sold an impressive 71,230 copies, but it still was not enough to top Maroon 5 for the #2 spot. This is an amazing feat for Lecrae, as he continues to push the envelope for Christian hip-hop and generates a bigger fanbase for the genre.

After leaving the music scene in 2003 and returning in 2011 with mixtape .sailing soul(s) and Sail Out in 2013, R&B songstress Jhene Aiko dropped her debut album, Souled Out, today. Aiko is one of the biggest up-and-comers in the R&B scene right now, Souled Out being on both Complex Magazine and MTV‘s lists of the most anticipated albums of 2014.

In the past few years, Aiko has been featured on tracks by the likes of Big Sean, Drake, and J. Cole. With her latest release, Aiko’s talent speaks for itself and on most of the tracks her raw emotion carries them through without the need for big name rappers; however, “To Love and Die” feat. Cocaine 80’s and “Pretty Bird [Freestyle]” feat. Common are welcome additions. Another collaboration on the album, “Promises”  features not only her daughter, Namiko, but also the previously recorded voice of Aiko’s brother, Miyagi, prior to his death in 2012. While all of her music is deeply personal, here the album hits an especially intimate note.

From start to finish, the album chronicles a transformation—one that Aiko’s velvety voice glides through. From heartbreak to healing, Souled Out runs full circle with pitfalls, day dreams, and victories along the way. Aiko is devilishly sly in the way her soft croons cut deep into her enemies (mainly men who have wronged her). Souled Out is a welcome retreat from the party, like those moments alone in the bathroom of the house party where you re-examine everything you’ve done wrong, or the silent walk home alone from your significant others’ house. Her tracks are pensive, resonant, and sometimes deceptively angry. Drift off with Aiko and you’ll be lost for hours.

As the music world waits for the official release of Jhene Aiko‘s debut album, Souled Out, Jhene took a breather during this months Lollapalooza festival to sip some tea. This particular photo is apart of PaperMag‘s Summer Tour Diary Series where they follow some of their favorite bands and DJ’s during this years hottest tours. They caught up with Jhene and snapped some cool photos before her set at Lollapalooza.

Souled Out is set to be released September 9th,but she’s already given us a glimpse of what is to come with singles such as “To Love & Die,” produced by James Fauntleroy and “The Pressure.” She’s also been releasing snippets of the albums singles via her Instagram.
