Keep NYC Skateboarding is a benefit event motivated to keep disadvantaged youth skating by collecting old, still ride-able skateboards. They’re joined by Boards For Bros, an organization that specializes in giving skateboards to kids who can’t afford them, along with sponsor The Harold Hunter Foundation, which is known for helping youth gain access to skateboarding in a major way (all in the name of legendary NYC skateboarder Harold Hunter). Also joining the fun will be the talented artist Leon Karssen, known for his artwork that deals with skateboarding (which can be seen via several skateboarding companies).

Keep NYC Skateboarding‘s main goal as a benefit event is to motivate the skateboarding community to donate old gear, making sure kids who can’t afford skateboards can have access to them. The even will also offer each person who donates a chance to win gifts from The Harold Hunter Foundation and Leon Karseen via raffles. The event also brings together some great musical talent, led by Ben Robey from legendary group Ninjasonik, Black Punk (with frontman Black Dave), Chinatown duo Blahsum, hardcore Punkers Almost Aimless, Necrotic Society and the up-and-coming all-girl band Jigsaw Youth.

Legendary skateboarder Stevie Williams announced his AYC apparel company’s new Skateboard Fresh collection featuring a limited edition Eazy E and Mike Miller collaboration. The new t-shirts feature an iconic image of NWA’s star Eazy E holding his infamous Natas skateboard in the parking lot of Ruthless Records, captured by photographer Mike Miller, a legend in his own right who captured some of the images that would come to define L.A. Hip-Hop. The new collection is now available online and in retailers.

Originally designed for professional skateboarder turned actor, Jason Lee, the Natas skateboard seen in the image is notorious for its symbols of violence, horror, and sex. “With the gun and that Natas board, this photo is some evil gangsta shit,” notes Stevie Williams (@steviewilliams). Lil Eazy E, the legend’s son, says seeing this iconic image reminds him how much he really misses his father. He says this photo being brought to life through AYC apparel makes him think of “his father’s legacy on a different viewing and how his impact goes far and beyond just Hip-Hop.”

“Back then skating and Hip-Hop did not mix,” recalls Mike Miller (@mikemillerphoto). The new collection is symbolic of the unprecedented impact Eazy E and NWA had on the skateboarding world. “The world doesn’t know, but us inner city Compton kids in the early age of life, enjoyed the sport on the skateboard my father gave me. I learned how to skate from him!” says Lil Eazy E. The huge, raw beats, underground punk rock ideology, and shared contempt for authority was what every skater never knew they were always waiting for. The echoes of that explosion still resonate in every corner of skateboard culture in their apparel, soundtracks and their outlook on the world.

The Pro+ Am Collection originated as a project to put together four different professional model shoes with colorways redesigned by four different amateur skaters. So far Supra has produced collabs such as Boo Johnson and Lizard King, Erik Ellington and Spencer Hamilton, Terry Kennedy and Kevin Romar, and now Stevie Williams and Keelan Dadd.

The new addition has black and turquoise padded mesh lining, black/hot-pink rope laces, and it is constructed on a unique, translucent, hot-pink cup sole. It also comes with a PRO + AM Collection hang tag and sock liner. Keelan treated the S1W to a black, snakeskin-embossed suede upper with black patent leather, black suede, and turquoise and hot-pink accents.

“Yeah, the shoe is pretty wild,” Keelan said of his take on the Stevie Williams S1W. “I chose the hot-pink because that’s a pretty strong color to be wearing—you gotta have some confidence to be able to pull that shoe off, you know? But, yeah, I just like wild shoes sometimes, crazy colors, just switch up my swag a little bit here and there. And I’ve just been hyped on the whole PRO + AM Collection all year. Since this is the last one, I wanted it to be a banger. I think everyone is gonna be hyped on it.”

Hyped is an understatement at this point. With the S1W being the last sneaker in the Pro + Am Collection, it is going to be a tough running to see what Supra comes up with next. Locals Only is the photographic history of the the 70’s California skate scene during the height of the drought which lead to explosion in not only bowl riding but the sport of skateboarding. “One afternoon in 1975, a young photographer named Hugh Holland drove up Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Los Angeles and encountered skateboarders carving up the drainage ditches along the side of the canyon. Immediately transfixed by their grace and athleticism, he knew he had found an amazing subject. Although not a skateboarder himself, for the next three years Holland never tired of documenting skateboarders surfing the streets of Los Angeles, parts of the San Fernando Valley, Venice Beach, and as far away as San Francisco and Baja California, Mexico.

It’s not clear whether Nick Brandreth is a full-time photographer and part-time adventurer, or if it’s the other way around. The New Jersey native can usually be found behind the lens, on a mountain bike, building trails in the woods, or with his small pack of Brittany Spaniels. While growing up, Nick was a wrestler competing on the state and national level.

Ever since Yo! MTV Raps, MTV has marked its place in the advancement of hip hop culture and became a safe place to discuss the changing spirits and attitudes of youth around the world.

For the first time in 3o years, MTV has finally decided to make a big change for themselves and have  created a brand new logo. To promote the new design and acknowledge its historic evolution, MTV has created a series of commercials. These ads exemplify the adapting spirit of today’s youth with specific examples of sub-cultures ranging from the new possibilities of graffiti (above) to a group of diversified skateboarders and a duo of young DIY philanthropists.

The newest generation of youth of today are growing, defying stereotypes and becoming true individuals. MTV enters the scene to document it.
