Washington Heights dweller, Raze, returns to RESPECT. with his latest offering, titled “Belly of the Beast.”  Produced by SRFSCHL’s own, Rusty Mack, the rapper delivers tough lyrics over soothing and smooth harmonies provided by Mack’s head nodding instrumental.

For the broken-down bodegas, Wall Street wannabes and underground club kids; there’s a new hip-hop artist looking to Raze the Bar in this city. INeedARaze’s style speaks to the ladies at the bar and the men looking to take them home. The music consistently crosses genres but the lyrics and delivery still remain true to its authentic NYC brand of hip-hop.

Just in time to celebrate this holy holiday—well, for the stoners amongst us, anyways—Washington Heights, N.Y.’s own INEEDARAZE shows love to his favorite blunt wrap on his melodic new banger, “Double Dutch.”

The 4/20-centric track is another winning collaboration between Raze and his go-to producer, Rusty Mack of Harry Fraud’s acclaimed SRFSCHL crew. With Mack’s lively and layered instrumental as his canvas, the New York rapper pays tribute to more than just the wraps he’ll be using all day (though there’s plenty of that, too).

Raze doubles down on damn near everything within reach, from the women he attempts to bring home to his crib, to all the out-of-state weed he can possibly consume. As he says in the first verse, “Two at one time like I’m losin’ my mind/ Two at one time/ Two at one time/ One in each hand like they’re made to be mine.” As for what exactly he’s doubling down on at that point, that’s for Raze to know (hint: double meanings abound here) and you to figure out.

And this brings us back to honesty. It’s a broad term. Does the average listener today value an honest artist? True, transparent lyrics don’t necessarily come a dime a dozen. But when they do it is special. It’s crucial in fact, in the midst of illusion and hyper-fantasy that we hear often on the mainstream side.

With that comes New York emcee Danny Matos, here with the second leak off of his forthcoming ‘The Hangar EP’ (01/08). If you missed the RESPECT. Magazine premiere of his first “New Genre” release, you should probably do that now. Rusty Mack, handling the production on the entire EP, provides  incredible canvases for Danny to work on. Their chemistry is undeniable and the whole project was recorded together – yet another commendable note.

“I’m being open and holding a mirror to myself with this project..”

NYC’s upstart emcee, Danny Matos, is here to proclaim a “New Genre”, with the debut leak off his January 8th debut EP, The Hangar, which we’re pleased to premiere today, here at RESPECT.

Pouring his soul on wax, Danny’s mission statement is based on the writings of English politician, Sir Edwin Sandys and his time tested proverb: Honesty is the best policy. 

Seldom celebrated in today’s Hip-Hop climate that puts fast cars and jerrery (must watch that link) at the forefront, Matos is here to tell you that all that glitters ain’t gold. For when it comes to rappers, we’ve seen their whip get repoed and chains get snatched, so maybe it’s time that Hip-Hop reevaluates it’s priorities.

With production supplied by Rusty Mack, and additional instrumentation handled by the Red Walrus, both Surf School affiliates provide the backdrop for Danny’s new rap Magna Carta as he concludes in his last verse, “Everything I’m spittin’ is timeless, it’s my arrival it’s viral”.   

Hopefully, with Danny’s help we’ll see ‘honest rap’ listed soon in Wikipedia’s list of hip hop genres.
