When Terrance Sims asked Ambrielle-Baker Rogers, Morgan Coleman and Miah Bell-Olson to participate in a Black History Month project at Milwaukee College Prep, I’m sure he had no idea that one of the projects would go viral. Per Jerrica Rogers, mother of Ambrielle Baker-Rogers– who spoke with The Huffington Post —Sims wanted to create a series of posters that positively affirmed the excellence of his students as well as shine light on the beauty of African-American culture in preparation for Black History Month and by looking at the re-created poster above, I would say the mission was definitely accomplished.

The three beauties, who received help from their moms to dress up as the iconic figures, had their photo taken and added to the Hidden Figures poster that features Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae and Octavia Spencer. Rogers thought the picture was so astounding she shared it to her Facebook page and it went viral sparking the attention of Henson, Monae and Spencer. All three women commented on the photo:

The girls enjoyed dressing up for the project as well as seeing the movie Hidden Figures so much so they saw it twice! Talk about getting into character. Hidden Figures is now playing nationwide at a theater near you.

The Oscars not only have African Americans being nominated for either the first or second time, there’s also three ladies taking up the three out of five slots in the Best Supporting Actress Category.

Viola Davis

Davis, will be making history as being the first African American woman to receive three Oscar nominations. Davis delivered a powerful performance in Fences where she co-starred alongside academy award nominee, Denzel Washington. This has been an awesome year for Davis who just recently received a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame.

Octavia Spencer

Spencer got the Oscar nod after portraying Dorothy Vaughn in Hidden Figures. The film chronicles the story of three black women who worked at NASA and helped put men into orbit. If won, this would be Spencer’s second Oscar win.

Naomi Harris

Harris also received an Oscar nod for her portrayal of Paula, in the film Moonlight where she plays a drug addicted mother who faces conflict as she tries to raise a son, who has his own issues and problems to face.

According to US Weekly, social media has been ablaze with comments in how the Oscars has changed within the last year. A couple of people took to social media to express their excitement over this years selections:

“So great to see so many black artists nominated for Oscars this year!”

“I’m so excited the Academy Awards nominated 3 incredible, talented, strong black women 4 BSA! It’s abt damned time! #Hopeful #Change #Oscars.”

With this type of news, the Oscars may be looking to have a bright future in more show viewings. Let’s just hope this new change in diversity, sticks around. The 89th Academy Awards will air live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on ABC February 26th at 8:30 p.m.
