Set to release this April, Nina will follow the ‘Priestess of Soul’s’ life after her exile from France, showcasing her troubled reputation, alcoholism, and determination to get back into the spotlight.

Despite the powerful depiction of one of the Civil Right’s Movement most influential forces, controversy swarms around Saldana’s appearance. ‘The Guardian’ asserts that critics have taken shots at Saldana’s lighter complexion and Hispanic roots, suggesting that the role has been “awkwardly miscast” due to her prosthetic nose and darkened skin; some have insinuated that Saldana was depicting blackface.

Simone’s estate isn’t too pleased with the casting either. When Saldana first received the role in 2012, daughter Simone Kelly wrote “I love Zoe Saldana, we all love Zoe… From Avatar to Colombiana, I’ve seen those movies a few times. But not every project is for everybody. And I know what my mother would think. I just don’t get it.”

Kelly’s discontent of Saldana’s casting led to her suggesting ‘HTGAWM’s’ Viola Davis and ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman’s’ Kimberly Elise, women who exhibit features as strong as her mother’s.

“My mother was raised at a time when she was told her nose was too wide, her skin was too dark,” Kelly said in her interview with New York Times. “Appearance-wise, this is not the best choice.”

To add more fuel to the fire, Nina Simone’s estate recently blasted  Saldana on the Twitter, telling her to “Keep Nina’s name out of mouth [for] the rest of her life.”

As a response to the Simone’s estate, Saldana uploaded the poster to movie on Instagram, leaving it captionless.

Since landing the role, Saldana has continuously combated critics. ‘The Guardian‘ noted that during her 2014 interview with HipHollywood, the ‘Avatar’ actress explained her decision by stating that she “knows who she is” and “she knows what Nina Simone means to her.” “It doesn’t matter how much backlash I will get for it,” Saldana told Allure in 2013. “I will honor and respect my black community because that’s who I am.”

A$AP Rocky tweets after attack in New Zealand hotel elevator. While the life of a celebrity may be overwhelming at times, (no please, tell me how you can’t handle the pressure of fortune and adoration) a rapper’s accessibility adds a whole other piece to the celebrity puzzle. TMZ reported that Flacko was jumped by three men in a New Zealand hotel elevator. Witnesses reported that amidst the attack, Rocky protected the girls who were in the elevator with him, until hotel security eventually broke it up the altercation. While I’m obviously speculating, there had to be more than just terrible judgment and too much “Lord Of The Rings” involved. (Get it? LOTR was filmed in New Zealand – never mind) Nevertheless, the police arrested a 35 year-old New Zealander and Rocky took to Twitter to clear the air in what is obviously the most “I be that pretty muthat fu*ka” type of way. All kidding aside, it’s great news he’s fine and what this shows is not only is everyone susceptible to violence and inexplicable nonsense, but the limelight often times positions people to be more prone to these things, almost creating a target of sorts. Between the music and fashion worlds, the limelight shines heavy on Rakim Mayers. Playing it in my head and hearing the absurdity of the “Fu*k A$AP” chant, all I can hear is “Rocky, Rocky, Rocky.”

Watts, California rapper Jay Rock was severely injured in a motorcycle accident February 15th. Jay then underwent successful surgery yesterday, February 16th according to tweets from TDE CEO Top Dawg.

Top Dawg tweeted out, “Pray 4 @jayrock he had a bad accident on his motorcycle.. He’s hurt pretty bad… #TDE” at 7:30pm Pacific. Approximately 2 hours before label-mate Kendrick Lamar‘s breathtaking performance at the Grammys, Jay Rock was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Due to rumors circulating that Rock was on his death bed, Top Dawg quickly dispelled the hearsay and tweeted Jay Rock was not in a coma or near death, but did acknowledge he had a lot of broken bones.

Jay Rock’s album 90059, released last September was received fairly well by critics and had TDE fans rejoicing. As the original member of the LA based power-label, many were ecstatic he was finally receiving his well-deserved shine and praise. But now those same supporters share concern for Top Dawg Entertainment’s favorite underdog and his well-being.

Atlantic Records recently promoted music industry veteran Mar Brown to Senior VP of Urban Radio Promotion, after just two years as the VP of Urban Radio Promotion. The respected industry executive has wasted no time in utilizing his expertise and creative wit to help lead the charge in making Atlantic one of the nations top record labels for urban radio airplay in 2015.

Brown takes his leadership role seriously and says he’s learned from some of the best in the business on how to create success in every position he’s held. “I have personal relationships with the artists I work with. I protect them and they appreciate that,” says the Los Angeles native. “I’ve learned from my mentors that being a great leader requires being able to cater to everyone’s personality. They have to believe that you’re going to take them where they’ve never been before. It’s about leading by example. Plan the work and work the plan.”

He credits his mentors Juliette Jones (EVP Atlantic Records), John Platt (CEO Warner Chapell), and Mark Boyd (former Music Executive) for showing him the ropes in the industry early on.  As the new Senior VP, Brown oversees and cultivates effective methods to build relationships between urban radio stations across the country with the label’s artists. He’s currently working closely with Atlantic artists Wiz Khalifa, K. Michelle, Kevin Gates and Ty Dolla $ign to name a few.

Brown began his illustrious career in the industry 17 years ago as the West Coast Regional/National Mix Show rep of Radio Promotion at Virgin Records before landing the VP of Rap Promotion/National Mix Show Promotion at Interscope Records.  Brown then took the helm of Sr. National/Head of Mix Show Radio Promotion at Warner Brothers Records in 2012 and was then promoted to VP of Urban Radio Promotion of Atlantic Records in early 2014.  Brown has played a significant role in landing numerous #1 hit records on the Urban Radio Charts for notable artists including Wiz Khalifa, Omarion, Meek Mill, Wale, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, The Game, French Montana, Mary J. Blige,  and Janet Jackson.

Known for his ability to morph multiple genres into one brilliant and colorful masterpiece (plastic soul), musical icon, David Bowie passed this morning (Monday, Jan. 11) after losing his battle with cancer.

The English legend was not afraid to be different; his music was tailored to those who were often alienated, but would later set the trend for others to follow. His ability to mix jazz, soul and rock accompanied his flamboyant appearance, literally allowing him to stand out from any other artist that tried to perfect his coined genre, glam-rock.

Bowie’s resilience and ability to teleport into multiple musical arenas has inspired a multitude of artists. Before paying their respects to Bowie’s family on social media, dozens of big name artists showed their appreciate by sampling his work.
