Murs is hard to keep up with—he’s always got his hands in something, most recently, live television. As part of Murs‘ Where You At? L.A., a live show with Boost Mobile, the former Living Legends emcee will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest freestyle rap. Titled “Bars For Days,” the event takes place during the finale episode of the five part series.

According to Murs (real name Nick Carter), the idea to break the Guinness World Record came about while discussing Boost’s streaming program.

“We were talking about Boost’s unlimited music streaming program and how to get that across to consumers,” Murs said in an interview with Billboard. “I’m like we can do a 24-hour rap and started suggesting people for it. The more I talked, the more it seemed like something I could do…But this will be live streamed for all 24 hours. People can go to bed, wake up and make sure I’m still rapping. Whenever you want to tune in, I’ll be there for 24 hours. The more I talk about this now, the more I think about ‘what did I get myself into.’”

Murs also mentioned he hopes he can take the show on the road.

“I would love to take the series to other markets and expose hip-hop cultures there like New York, Atlanta, the San Francisco Bay Area,” he said. “Texas has a lot going on, as does Chicago. If we go to the East Coast, hopefully we could do something with North Carolina hip-hop. There’s a lot of hip-hop out there from Kid ‘n Play to 9th Wonder and others.”

The first episode of Where You At? L.A. aired Wednesday, July 13. The “Bars for Days” 24-hour live show airs September 28. Visit www.facebook.com/murs for updated information.

It’s a track eight years in the making, but alas, the Murs and Kosha Dillz collaboration has arrived in video format. The Jewish rapper extraordinaire met the longtime Living Legend in 2008 after a show in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Murs didn’t immediately like the overzealous young emcee, but eventually Kosha calmed his ways and convinced Murs he needed to be on a song with him.

The result is “We Are Different” and the song couldn’t be more well-timed. Considering the cultural climate our society is currently experiencing, “We Are Different” tackles an important topic. Featuring people of various ethnicities, backgrounds, disabilities, and socio-economical statuses, the video reminds us we are all part of a complex fabric and should be treated with respect no matter what we look like, how much money we have or where we’re from. Produced by mutual friend Jesse Shatkin and directed by Diwon, “We Are Different” is some of Kosha Dillz’s best work to date.

“Working with Murs is great experience,” Kosha says. “I get excited when artists I want to work with are excited about a song and concept that brings us together. He is an artist who cares and you can hear it in his rhymes.”

Kosha is getting ready for his SXSW showcase in Austin, Texas, which features headliner Kool Keith. Check out the full schedule below and watch the video for “We Are Different.”

Now the duo released their first visual, “Otha Fish.”

The Joel Darden-directed clip begins with Murs waking up from police sirens before finding himself on a secluded beach with picturesque views. Visibly dazed and confused, he makes the most of this excursion by enjoying the sandy beach with a trio of scantily-clad hotties.

Murs and 9th Wonder’s “Brighter Daze” is their sixth album together and it looks to be one of the best projects. The collection is complied of 12 songs and features guest appearances from Mac Miller, Rapsody, Problem, Bad Lucc, Reuben Vincent, Propaganda and more. Watch the dope new video below.

Murs and 9th Wonder decided to crash the year-end party with a treat of their own. The California lyrist and North Carolina beatsmith have joined forces once again to release another collaborative album, “Brighter Daze”.

The 10-track project features guest appearances from Problem, Reuben Vincent, Mac Miller, Bad Lucc, Rapsody and Propaganda, with production by 9th Wonder.

Revered for his storytelling rap skills, Murs flexes those skills on the cautionary cut, “How to Rob With Rob,” before slowing down the tempo with the rap ballad, “Lover Murs.” While “Brighter Daze” is a thought-provoking listen, there are a few selections that stand out.

One is the subdued posse cut, “The Shutters,” on which the aforementioned Reuben Vincent and Bad Lucc join Murs for some verbal gymnastics. The other highlight is “Walk Like a God,” featuring Rapsody and Propaganda, which sees the three rhymer-slingers getting spiritual.

The sixth edition of their ongoing series of collaborative albums, Murs and 9th Wonder rise to the occasion yet again with “Brighter Daze” and deliver some quality hip-hop to enjoy for the rest of 2016 and beyond.

Murs recently met up with us to talk about his Strange Music debut Have a Nice Life. The 14-track compilation serves as a collection of personal anecdotes, observations, and forward thinking that make for a great album. Check out our conversation about it below.

Anyone who follows MURS knows that is his family is important. So it’s no surprise that they are one of the first things mentioned on the title track “Have A Nice Life.” When asked what his Father’s Day plays were he had this to say:

“I just want to home that’s all, I’ve been away from my wife and child for about 2 months now, I don’t know how much my wife misses me but I miss being home with my family. I don’t know how much they miss me they seem to do ok without me, they have a lot of fun. But I definitely miss being home with them.”

“Have A Nice Life,” and all the tracks that follow it possess upbeat instrumentals. When asked about the production choices he had this to say:

“As someone who’s been performing live for 16 years its always good to have music that will make people move, whether they’re 60 or 6 months people love to move.” And when asked if the upbeat production had anything to with the album title Have A Nice Life, he claimed not to be that much of a mastermind.

His track “Mi Corazon” finds MURS rapping complete verses in Spanish, here’s how MURS says that came together:

“I’ve been love with Chicanas, Mexican girls, Cholas most of my growing up in LA cause my family owns a dry cleaners in South Central where I worked. And they would come in and drop of their clothes, and I was enamored with them. But during the time I grew up it wasn’t cool to have black and brown relationships like that, so I just admire them from afar.” Murs said.

“And also being from LA I feel it’s very necessary for us to respect Chicano culture… I try to put Spanish in all my songs but this time I wanted to go to full on. I was able to write it all by myself with my checking with friends for conjugations. It’s overdue I think there should way more Spanligsh in hip-hop because from Southside Chicago to the West Coast, in the Bronx where you have Puerto Rican influences is really heavy in the essence and the beginnings of hip-hop and I feel like it’s underrepresented.” he continued.

“Okey Dog” is a track that is inspired one of longtime friends, here’s a little bit of what he had to say about the visual that accompanied the track:

“I’d rather let another artist interpret my art, I’m not a visual artist, so I allow the visual artist to interpret my lyrics…I just tried to help his vision come to life…the only thing that I had to be careful about was how the character [Okey Dog] was portrayed because it’s a real person, and I had to call and get clearance to make the song, he’s not someone I want to piss off.”

His track “The Worst” tells the story of a man that falls into infidelity.

When describing how that came together he talks about constructing the hook, refers to the commitment that comes along with being married for 5 years, and mentions that “side chicks are usually glamorized and glorified.”

In this case “The Worst” serves as a cautionary tale of side chicks and MURS reminds us that, “A side chick is one of the most powerful people in your life once if you open that door.”

Other things that we’ve learned from MURS during this interview are:

All of the tracks on Have a Nice Life have an underline message, even “Pussy and Pizza”

Tracks like “Woke Up Dead,” “PTSD,” and “No More Control” all bring up issues that need to be heard

He’s teaching his 2 and a half year old how to skate (doing so over FaceTime can be challenging)

There will be “no more collaborative projects or festivals” he is just focused on being a better artist and making more music

The Special Effects tour is a great opportunity to perform in front of a large group of dedicated and new fans alike, and learn from Tech N9Ne’s live performance every night.

Ultimately Have a Nice Life and Murs reminds us that it is possible to have a nice life, but it isn’t always going to be easy.
