One of the most polarizing artists in Hip-Hop has returned with an official follow-up to his debut, There’s Really A Wolf. Below lies Russ‘ sophomore album Zoo, which contains 12 tracks and additional appearances from Scott Storch, Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg and Mahalia.

G Perico – Guess What?

One of the West Coast’s most authentic artists is back with some fire for the Summer’s end. G Perico delivers Guess What?, a 7-track cruise with few additional appearances (only Kalin.FrFr and Garren make the cut).

Stream below, alongside a new visual for “All Nighter.” It’s also a precursor to more from the L.A. emcee, which I hope will come sooner than later.

Estelle – Lovers Rock

Estelle is back with a new album titled Lovers Rock, and — as the title may suggest — the British singer has decided to incorporate Reggae, Dancehall and more for a conceptual work of art that tells a beautiful story of her parent’s cinema-worthy relationship. She doesn’t tell it alone, either: Kranium, Maleek Berry, Luke James, Konshens, Chronixx, Alicai Harley and more provide assistance on the 14-track offering.

Joey Purp – QUARTERTHING

All talent aside, the fact that Joey Purp has RZA and GZA two separate tracks makes this a surefire listen alone. With that said, the Chicago emcee keeps the SAVEMONEY train moving with his new album QUARTERTHING, which — in addition to the Wu-Tang assists — sees appearances from Ravyn Lenae, Cdot Honcho and more.

YoungBoy Never Broke Again – 4Loyalty

This year, YoungBoy Never Broke Again has certainly come into his own as one of the most talented (and transparent) artists of Hip-Hop’s new generation. For the past couple of weeks, the Louisiana artist has delivered two quality EPs: 4Freedom and, alongside Kevin Gates, 4Respect. Now, he keeps the momentum going with 4Loyalty, four new tracks that see appearances from Quando Rondo and Young Thug. Vibe to it below.

Berner is back with a new album titled RICO, his second offering this year following The Big Pescado. As with its predecessor, RICO contains a slew of artists and friends: (Taylor Gang affiliates) Wix Khalifa and Ty Dolla $ign, Curren$y, DJ Quik, Kevin Gates, Young Buck (who is not having his best week ever), Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Styles P, DJ Paul, Cam’ron and loads more. Virginia-based artist Masego (finally!) delivers his debut album, Lady Lady. The 14-track release was led by singles “Tadow,” “Old Age” and “Queen Tings”; additional appearances include SiR, FKJ, Sounwave, Ari Lennox and more.

YBN Nahmir, YBN Almighty Jay & YBN Cordae – YBN: The Mixtape

The Young Boss N***as movement continues to build, the next big moment being the below mixtape, led by current YBN frontrunners Nahmir, Almighty Jay and Cordae. Add in additional features from Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, Machine Gun Kelly, Cuban Doll and Asian Doll, and you have a solid compilation-style offering that should get plenty of play during cooler months. Two artists that people need to get to know asap because they are hot right now!

American singer, songwriter, and dancer Mila J has a few harsh and straightforward words to share with the lying, cheating, bad boys all over the globe. In her newest single released on SoundCloud titled “F*ckboy,” the 34-year-old artist shares that she is done with the silly games and the hurt being caused from an ex-lover. As the lyrics seem to strengthen Mila, she finds herself feeling very little grief for bringing an end to a toxic relationship. The cover art is oh so sexy and fierce, and indicates that our Mila J is stronger than ever.

The track serves as an anthem for all women suffering from someone that has done them wrong. As she passionately sings the lyrics, “You know I don’t f**k with you bae” she empowers her female listeners to not waste their precious time on those no good f*ckboys. “Here’s something for all of my ladies that don’t want to deal with a “F*ckboy,” she tweeted. The Museum of Light was granted exclusive access to interviews with the acts on Motown’s label at a July showcase held at Capitol Records in Los Angeles. The acts who are defined as The New Definition of Soul talked to The Museum of Light about their journey as artists and shared their reflections on alchemy.

In this special series Alchemy in Motown Mila J, Sebaastian Kole, and Kevin Ross will share their thoughts on becoming a star, not in the sense of “fame” but in the sense of alchemy.

Singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer, and all-around creative Mila J is like a 90s west coast classic; down to earth, easy to vibe to, and with story behind it all. With so many projects on the way, it’s dope to be able to see not only the inspiration, but also the creative process, and even the mindset of this artist. Often times, the music industry can be overwhelming but Mila marches to a different beat and doesn’t let the business compromise her integrity or creativity. Her attitude is the same on and off of her songs, raw and unafraid, Mila shows just how far confidence and diversity can get you.

RESPECT.:  You’ll be on the Late Nights tour with Jeremih really soon, what are you looking forward to the most?  

Mila J: This time around I’ll be performing all new songs. It’s refreshing to be able to do new stuff and get feedback.

RESPECT.: From listening to your EPs, your music is definitely easy to vibe to. What’s your creative process like? 

Well, I’m kinda all over the place. I can hear something or see something at random times, like in the shower or in the car. No pressure, no force.

RESPECT.: Where do you usually draw style/music inspiration from?

I’m a 90s baby so that music is naturally in me. I was always inspired by TLC, Janet,  Jodeci and Snoop growing up, I thought I’d be the female Snoop. I also love the oldies, like 70s music, as an adult I appreciate the fact that i was exposed to it.

RESPECT.: Is there an album in the works?

There is. I’m not 100% done, but I’m close. Honestly, I’m just trying to top what I’ve done last, kinda stepping out and trying new things, creating whatever kinda art I feel like doing.

RESPECT.: Who have you been wanting to collaborate with? 

Honestly, I wanna work with female artists. I feel like so many guys are able to team up but I feel like on the women’s side it’s really not that unified.

RESPECT.: What advice would you give to a rising artist trying to drop their first project?

Well first, you have to believe it and be confident in it. For me personally, when I was in groups and stuff I was the rapper, so at first I didn’t see myself being a singer, it took encouraging people around me. A producer asked me why I wasn’t trying to sing and I honestly didn’t know why, it took the encouragement to help me realize I could do it. So, I would say having positive people around you definitely helps. I feel like it takes time but until it really clicks for you, it’s not gonna go anywhere. No one’s going to believe something that you don’t.

Berry Gordy’s got to be proud of how the Motown brand continues to curate the best of the best. Torchbears Sebastian Kole, La’Porsha Renae, and Kevin Ross delivered incredible sets Tuesday night at Capitol Studios in Hollywood during The New Definition of Soul event hosted by their talented labelmate Mila J.

The Museum of Light was blessed to host exclusive pre-show interviews with the acts on Motown’s Facebook page. The artists discussed carrying on the label’s legacy, gave updates on their new projects, and even talked alchemy.

On the stage, they got down to business. Sebastian, who collaborated with Alessia Cara on “Here,” took us to his hometown Birmingham with his foot-stomping energy, hilarious sense of humor, plus rhythm and blues vocals, especially on “Love Doctor.” It was also a nice surprise to hear his cover of Smokey Robinson’s Motown favorite “Cruisin.”

Fresh off a successful run on the final season of American Idol, first runner up La’Porsha Renae killed it with her brand new song “Good Woman,” a guttural final plea for her cheating man to change his ways.

Kevin Ross opened at the piano with “Be Great” and brought even more inspiration with “Dream” and segued into Phil Collin’s “In the Air.”

The trio closed the show with something really cool — a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s timeless Motown classic, “Love’s In Need of Love Today.”

Motown let it’s Light shine last night. We were glad to be in the house.
