Earlier this year, Long Beach resident Mikey PX put out one of the 1st Quarter’s most surprising projects with his debut, It’s Depressing, Being A Shooter. With a strong buzz that’s carried Mikey all the way through the summer, he returns with the short, but sweet follow up EP, Since You’re Here Now.

Clocking in at five tracks, Since You’re Here Now is a brief but exciting ride that showcases Mikey rapping a bit harder & a lot more inspired than he was on his last project. Right from the start, the intro sets the tone with what might be the most quoted line from the whole project, “I got some head from a freak bitch with a choker.”

Despite the project being an easy listen for each of the 5 songs, the two that standout without a doubt are, “When The Moon Blue,” & “Upset.” The former is an energetic, motivated track where Mikey spills all the beans about everything from label woes, cases & more over some ridiculous KapeThaGoat production.

The latter, on the other hand, is the party anthem of the project. Crafted by perhaps the hottest producer on the West Coast at the moment in Ron-Ron, “Upset,” is a very 2018, California-sounding track that has the best potential on the album to go viral. With a wildly infectious hook to go along with addictive melodies from RonRon to compliment, expect this song to be on your radios sooner than later.

Other songs that highlight Mikey’s potential are, “Plug >>> Deal,” the high octane, Bambino assisted song that sees Mikey ditiching the nonchalant cadence for some much needed urgency & “This High Forever,” a sobering & reflective cut that broadcasts Mikey’s personal feelings on a jumbo screen over some distinct production from one of Las Vegas’ best, UliCookUp.

Long Beach native Mikey PX has had himself a quietly solid year. After releasing his debut project, It’s Depressing, Being A Shooter earlier this Spring, the Boy From The Hood enjoyed a string of blessings that included a few jam packed tour dates, a spot on the official Apple Music “New LA” playlist and his fair share of Industry attention. Mikey now returns with his new video for, “Home From The Hood (Intro).”

Serving as the intro to his debut, the video perfectly plays into the paranoia aspects of the song. The blue lighting combined with the trap aesthetic provided by the guns, trees and Cane’s cups doubled as ash trays plays right into Mikey’s brand of “creep” music, which sounds like a 1st cousin to Drakeo The Ruler’s signature style. “I was dead, woke up out that coma. Police smell my aroma, I’m from Southern California,” rhymes the 22-year-old over the eerie production provided by Kape Tha Goat.

Prince “Big Homie P” Eshan

Often in the music industry, we forget that the artists we see are a finished product of a team putting in a lot of hard work. From managers and stage crew, to publicists and nutritionists; your favorite artist is a corporation, not just an individual success. One of those jobs that’s probably one of the most important is security. As we know, some fans have a hard time differentiating reality from packaged product, and at times feel like they can do things they probably shouldn’t. There are also the people lurking in the shadows, just waiting for these celebs to slip up so they can seize the opportunity of a come up.

That’s where men like Prince “Big Homie P” Eshan come in.

Creating a name for himself by working security for models like Brittany Renner as well as a host of buzzing, up and coming artists, Eshan seized an opportunity of his own and started to branch out using the contacts he had made working security. In doing so, P came up with YouMade4It?, which is a national platform that gives rising artists the chance to perform alongside established ones, as well as the opportunity to play in front of new fans and industry insiders. The rotating event also pairs young creatives of all fields the chance to showcase their art and rub elbows with some of the city’s elite. In addition to this, Eshan also curates a carefully selected panel of experts who answer questions, give advice and do so much more.

With the next event happening June 23rd in Los Angeles in conjunction with BET Awards weekend, we got the chance to catch up with P to talk to him about his background, the origin of this amazing platform as well as other things. Read below.

RESPECT. Magazine: How did the idea for this showcase come about?

P: The last five to six years I’ve been working security for artist and models but I’ve always knew what I wanted to do. Keeping every door open really set me up to be successful in this business. I’ve always wanted to create a platform for artists and other creators to showcase their talents and network with like minded people. Not only will artist have a platform to showcase their creativity but each event we will have panelists to speak to our audience. The plan is to help out as many artist as we can in each market.

Can you give a little bit more of an idea on what you guys do?

P: YouMade4It? is another platform for up and coming artists, creators and entrepreneurs to gain more exposure We don’t just give opportunities to recording artists, but all artists, even if you have a clothing line or create paintings. When doing these events we go into these different markets and seek the the best talent, as well as reaching out to media and Hip-Hop influencers.

We just want to give artists a chance to touch different avenues that wouldn’t normally be reachable. It’s not who about who is the best, it’s about doing the best and creating dope art and great music. If you would like to be a part of this tour, you would have to put in a submission and a representative will get back to you. We listen and take a look at each submission and hand pick our participants. We build our own platforms, we make our own situations. I see great talent, networking is not about just connecting people. It’s about connecting people with people, people with ideas, and people with opportunities.

How many of these showcases have you done & what are some of the cities you’ve touched?

P: This is our first year doing the YouMade4It series in March we did #YouMade4ItATX in Austin featuring Hoodrich Pablo Juan, Zoey Dollaz, Rico Recklezz, Skippa Da Flippa, Johnny OZ and many more.

When you guys bring the show to a city, what are some of the things you look for with booking artists to perform?

P: When I’m in the process of setting up a event in a city my first question is who is the hottest DJ that has a relationship with artists, then we go from there to book the artist on the bill.

Los Angeles native Rucci has been making huge waves in the city as of late, how important was it for you to get somebody who’s so entrenched in the city’s scene to be apart of the show?

P: It was important for us to have Rucci on this show. I got in contact with Rucci through an producer/artist name Rob Two. Rob Two is very talented and has a relationship with a lot of creatives in the Los Angeles area.

Aside from performances, can you talk about the panel & what artists & fans can expect to walk away from it with?

P: I’m glad you asked about our #YouMade4ItLA panel because I believe this is very much needed and every event we attempt to educated our audience and the artists that attend. We will have a discussions on how artists can reach their full potential in this industry. We will touch on different topics such as branding, marketing, and more. After we will open the floor for the audience to ask questions.

What are the future plans for this showcase? Any festival aspirations?

P: Our future plans are to expand our brand and touch as many markets as possible. Becoming a well known festival is definitely part of the plan.

Traditionally, Hip-Hop has been known as the Land of Album Delays. Whether you chalk it up to the bloated egos notoriously bestowed in the genre, or a PC system that allows for artists to move as they please, it’s unchallenged that you’re more likely to get buttered up for a dream-project that’s never going to come — or at the very best takes forever — in Hip-Hop than anywhere else. We saw it as recently as Playboi Carti, who jokingly made an album cover of fans blasting him for delays and it goes back as far as Q-Tip’s notorious abilility to take forever on turning in final cuts. But maybe, just maybe, we’ve evolved past that.

Nope. Enter in 21-year-old Long Beach-to-Las Vegas transplant Mikey PX.

After knocking on clout’s door with buzzing Soundcloud singles like, “Who?” and “6171911,” Mikey has been teasing fans with dates for his new project, It’s Depressing, Being A Shooter for as far back as November. Now, he’s back with another banger with, “What A Day” an emotionally riveting track draped in sauce and an Erykah Badu sample that see’s Mikey again tackle grim subjects like death, depression and more with an unquestioned swagger. “Niggas in my ear like, ‘Damn, Mikey aint no star yet? Been in that motherfuckin’ trap since the carwreck,” is how this chilling track starts off and honestly, need I say more?

In addition to the track, Mikey’s manager announced the release date for the project, which is slated for March 13th. Let’s hope this is the one.

Mental health is a huge topic among Hip-Hop in 2017, and I’m all the way here for it. Throughout the history of the genre, it’s been almost taboo to talk about being down emotionally, especially for men….. Black men in particular. Not in 2017 though. Thanks to artists like Joe Budden, Kendrick Lamar and yes….. even Xxxtentacion, speaking about your mental state is no longer viewed as, “soft.” Instead, transparency is the new fad, and with the world claiming depression at higher rates than ever, it’s obvious that people are looking for direction.

It’s with this knowledge that Long Beach native Mikey PX crafted his upcoming project, ‘It’s Depressing, Being The Shooter’ which can only be described through early listens as a stark journey through the emotions of a 21-year-old who’s already seen and dealt with more than most 40-year-olds. Themes of death, depression, redemption and ultimately, triumph dominate the project, which is set to the tune of eerie melodies and thumping bass kicks. To kick the roll-out off properly, PX brings along Las Vegas rep, Benji for the premiere of the brand new visual for, “6171911,” a Lil’ Voe-produced banger which serves as the first single from, ‘It’s Depressing, Being The Shooter.’
