Given the tendency of Odd Future producers to create beats from scratch, it’s interesting to hear Domo and Earl on this sample-driven instrumental. Gibbs steals the show with a well-executed Baby Face reference, but the Odd Future rhymers still hold their own despite being in uncommon territory. In fact, they actually sound pleasingly soulful over Madlib‘s hazy production. “Robes” is the latest release from Gibbs and Madlib‘s upcoming album Pinata, due out in March. Listen below.

“Extra sauce with the bread stuck to the bottom.” If you’re not from Chicago or one of the few lucky cities that now has a Harold’s Chicken Shack, this line might have gone over your head. Nevertheless, even if you missed that reference, the beauty of this song is the way that both the instrumental and the vocals create and sustain that nostalgic vibe without being bombastic, demanding that you “get it.” Like a well-delivered personal tangent at a dinner party, an inside joke, the song keeps you engaged even while it alienates you. As we have seen time and time again, Madlib and Freddie Gibbs are a very exciting pair. Their collaborative album, Pinata, arrives in early 2014. Be prepared.

Pinata, the upcoming collaborative album between Freddie Gibbs and Madlib has had the rap underground salivating for awhile. It’s still not here yet, but “Deeper” is the latest release from the unexpected pair and it further demonstrates their chemistry. Driven by a screeching string loop and a blunt thud for a bass line, “Deeper” is the tale of a hardened guy dealing with the loss of a lover after leaving for jail mid-relationship. Gibbs executes the song’s concept with extreme precision, boasting while being perfectly vulnerable. There’s even a surprise twist at the end. According to Potholes in My Blog, the album will be out on February 4, 2014. If you weren’t already looking forward to Black History Month, now you definitely have a reason. As Madvillain showed us, Madlib plus a great emcee always equals success. The beat emperor’s latest collaboration is with Freddie Gibbs, Indiana’s finest. Together as Madgibbs, the pair has crafted a short project titled Shame. According to Stones Throw Records, the EP is just a sample of a longer collaboration due out sometime this fall.
