Rap nerds make a lot of prayers. Most of them don’t get answered – which is probably a good thing – but every now and then the rap gods oblige. “Robes” is one of those instances. Teaming up with Odd Future heavyweights Earl Sweatshirt and Domo Genesis, dynamic pair Freddie Gibbs and Madlib bring us a paced, sentimental track with a bluesy spirit.
Given the tendency of Odd Future producers to create beats from scratch, it’s interesting to hear Domo and Earl on this sample-driven instrumental. Gibbs steals the show with a well-executed Baby Face reference, but the Odd Future rhymers still hold their own despite being in uncommon territory. In fact, they actually sound pleasingly soulful over Madlib‘s hazy production. “Robes” is the latest release from Gibbs and Madlib‘s upcoming album Pinata, due out in March. Listen below.
