Flatbush Zombies are back with new music and visuals for their latest single, ”New World Order,” produced by Tyler Dopps and Sam Wish while the video is directed by Johnny Leflar.

Following their album Vacation In Hell, released earlier this year, FBZ continues to give their loyal listeners more high energy music while getting their point across to the fullest; their visuals capture the theme of professional wrestling, backyard-style. In addition to new music, the group is also set to rap head-to-head against Denzel Curry & Friends in Miami November 16th, so if you’re in Miami during that time, it’s something you won’t want to miss.

Summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean festival season is. After a crazy three months that saw festivals like Day N’ Night, Rolling Loud (Bay Area) and many more command the attention of the culture, a new festival in Arizona looks to join the ranks of the elite. Standing its first year ever, Chandler, Arizona’s Goldrush Festival is a unique event. Taking cue from mainstays like Hard Summer and others, Goldrush founder Thomas Turner decided to mesh his two loves of Electronic Dance Music and high-octane Hip-Hop under one roof, bringing out acts like Marshmello, Dillion Francis, Migos, Lil’ Uzi Vert, Ugly God and of course… Lil’ Pump.

*drops the “LIL’ PUMP” ad-lib with an air-horn*

With such a diverse line-up on tap, we’re exciting to be on hand covering the festival, which takes place next weekend, November 18th & 19th. Take a look at the seven acts, we’re most excited to see below.

Injury Reserve

Having spent a little time in The Grand Canyon state in High School, I’ve been aware of Valley natives Injury Reserve for quite some time now. Despite that, it wasn’t until this year when the trio went on a hot streak with the release of the single, “North Pole” as well as Google Translate Lady’s scene-stealing verse on fellow AZ native Lil’ Qwerty’s, “Hits For Days,” that I truly took notice to the group. With braggadocio frat raps that are complimented by high energy and stout lyricism, Injury Reserve should fit perfectly into the setting of the festival—and with the home-court advantage on their side, it could be one for the books for the trio.

Azizi Gibson

German-born, Los Angeles product, Azizi Gibson has been in and around the game for quite some time now. I first became hip to the energetic rapper with the single, “Smoking With the Gods,” a ridiculously in-depth and creative song disguised as a SoundCloud hit which see’s Gibson rhyme about a day in Heaven smoking with Zeus, Jesus and the rest of the gang — Gibson even throws a sly little dis at Judas, “Don’t you dare pass the blunt to Judas, he a traitor muthafucka. Are you stupid?” — and instantly became a fan. Similar to Injury Reserve, Gibson’s underrated ability to make bars sound cool will set in well with the restless crowd.

The Underachievers

After exploding onto the scene with 2013’s Inigoism, The Underachievers have carved out a nice career since their days back in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Signing to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records, the eccentric duo is one of the most refreshing acts in Hip-Hop’s recent years. Members Issa Gold and AK bounce off of one another perfectly, despite the numerous amount of solo projects between the two, highlighting a chemistry that is not often sustained in the genre. Older tracks like, “Gold Soul Theory” and fan-favorite, “Herb Shuttles” capture the UA craze at its’ height, while newer records like, “Gotham Nights” and “Cobra Clutch” showcase Issa and AK at a polished, more mature lyrical state. As the kids would say, they’re now in their bag. Having already seen the Beast-Coast duo a couple times before, I anticipate them put on a show for the sure-to-be sedated crowd of college kids.

Flatbush Zombies

I’m partially convinced that the Flatbush Zombies and UA had to be the first rap acts that festival founder Thomas Turner had in mind when he struck up the idea for this festival. Sure, UA is electric and the Brooklyn natives ooze stage presence, but post-apocalyptic trio the Flatbush Zombies take rowdy to another level. Maybe it’s due to the break-neck nature of their music, or maybe it’s just the fact that front-man Meechy Darko is one of the most sinister, yet underrated emcees in all of Hip-Hop–but whatever it is, the Zombies have a legitimate chance at having the most wild set of the whole festival. Couple that energy with the fact that Arizona is one of the most FBZ crazed cities in the country and you’ve got yourself a recipe for destruction. This is one set you will not want to miss.

Migos

Please, tell me—who’s had a better year than the Migos? After releasing an early candidate for album of the year in January’s Culture, the Atlanta trio never slowed down not one step. Instead, they put their foot on the gas and never relinquished, releasing hits by the dozens both together, “Too Hotty” and on their own. Actually, it’s separately where the Migos have probably done most of their brand-building. While Quavo hopped on every pop record that had a spot for an urban crooner, Off-Set decided to slash every single feature he was commissioned for and dropped a solid collaborative tape with 21 Savage and Metro Boomin’.

It’s TakeOff, though, who has taken the group to new heights. After an awkward encounter on Complex’s Everyday Struggle, TakeOff not having a verse on the group’s magnum opus, “Bad & Boujee” became more glaring than ever. Instead of falling into obscurity, the youngest member of the group upped the ante and started torching everything he touched, silencing anybody that labeled him the weak link and giving the group a third legitimate star. With Culture 2 on the horizon as well as the highly anticipated collab-tape from Quavo and Travis Scott, it doesn’t seem like the Migos show any signs of stopping. Be sure to catch them headlining at Goldrush Festival.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-175338" data-attachment-id="175338" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2017/11/goldrush-festival-7-acts-cant-wait-see/img_8387-1/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/IMG_8387-1.jpg?fit=5398%2C3744&ssl=1" data-orig-size="5398,3744" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"10","credit":"","camera":"Canon EOS 5D Mark II","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1504944368","copyright":"","focal_length":"110","iso":"500","shutter_speed":"0.003125","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="IMG_8387 (1)" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>Photo courtesy, Kiari Cook. </p>

Lil’ Uzi Vert

When it comes to Philadelphia native Lil’ Uzi Vert, it took me a while to join the club. While I always respected his notion that he was indeed a rock-star and not a rap one, he still rapped—and to me, he wasn’t very good at it. As a writer in this cesspool we call the culture, though, it is a sin to write off an obvious star too early just because his music failed to comfort your ears.

So instead of denouncing the man, I just shelved him and decided to hold judgement until I was able to see him live. One day, that chance came. Since that day, I’ve bumped every single Uzi album and since the release of his newest project, LUV is Rage 2, I’ve played a song off of that album every day. That’s how great of a performer he is, no exaggeration. His energy and overall execution of his records live could turn even the biggest of doubters into a Supreme satchel-wearing, hype-beast for a few songs. Hell, he did it to me. Try showing 2015 me, “The Way Life Goes,” and watch him laugh and then bark at you to get out of his face. If you’re already an Uzi fan, then you know what I’m talking about, but if you’re not? Come join us. It’s a lot more lit over here.

Lil’ Pump

One day when they make the inevitable internet bible, I pray that they don’t forget the innovative shit that South Florida native Lil’ Pump has done and rightfully place him among the Samson-like figures. At one point, Pump really had me trying to confirm if he went to Harvard Medical School or not. That’s how crazy his fan-base is—and while you make think it stems solely from ignorant social media acts, you’re wrong. The boy has bangers. After forcing his way into the homes of mainstream America with his first Billboard single, “Flex” a lo-fi, bass-heavy track that says, “Bitch I flex, Rick Ross” easily over 40 times, Pump followed that success up with his self-titled debut and it’s lead single, “Gucci Gang” which just recently burst into the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 list and blew every mind in Hip-Hop away, including mine.

Pump turned a so-so SoundCloud career that was beginning to be overshadowed by best-friend Smokepurpp, and leveled the fuck up like never seen before—and it all came from the internet. One can argue that Cardi B had the biggest come-up of 2017, and would be completely in the green for doing so—but let’s be real. Cardi had Love & Hip-Hop and few other mainstream plays to bolster her entry. Not Pump. For those that are old enough to remember – if you are, you’re probably not a Pump fan – I would argue that Twitter has done for Lil’ Pump what MySpace did for Drake—and we see where that ended up. Don’t miss Lil’ Pump, probably the hottest rapper in the game right now, only at Goldrush Festival.

You can purchase your tickets to the festival here, which is set to take place in Chandler, Arizona on November 18th & 19th.

4 years ago during the summer of 2012, a lot of things were happening. President Barack Obama was soon to be reelected to a second term, the new Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY had been unveiled, and Miami Heat superstar/media punching bag LeBron James had finally won his first NBA championship. This was also the time that I had first discovered this eccentric new Hip-Hop trio from NY named Flatbush Zombies. The first ever track I had heard from the collective was the solo cut by the obnoxious but always exciting Meechy Darko titled “Face-Off” off of their remarkably underrated debut mix tape D.R.U.G.S. and it immediately blew me away.

Not since ODB had I seen a rapper on the swank level of Meech, which was even more surprising when I found out how early into the game he and his bandmates truly were. The video featured Meech and the other two members of the group, Erick Arc Elliot and Zombie Jewice, walking through Flatbush with 40 ounces of Ol’ E in hand spitting outlandish bars such as, “I love weed n**ga/ I got a green thumb/ She F**k me n**ga, until she bleed cum” to a banging instrumental provided by sole producer for the group, Elliot aka The Architect. While their lyrics touch on many different topics such as motherhood, the downfalls of drug addiction, and wavy acid trips, the Zombies have always been praised for their originality as well as their brash attitudes toward the industry as a whole (except A$AP). With two critically acclaimed mix tapes and a few sold out country wide and world tours in their rearview, the young trio has kept it true to their roots of not giving a f**k while also evolving into more mature and well rounded artists, which is not an easy feat for most. Capitalizing off of the immense success from their debut album, 3001: A Laced Odyssey, as well as their acclaimed performance at Tidal‘s X 10/20 concert and their viral appearance on Hip-Hop podcast: Rap Radar, the Brooklyn natives decided to head out on a global tour, starting in the US, which has been sold out at almost every stop.

I got a chance to catch the stars in the making live in action in San Diego at The North Park Observatory on 4/30 and if there’s one thing that is certain about these men, they know how to put on a show. Check out my evening with Flatbush.

Although when artists come to California, they do 4-5 shows in various cities, the stop that every artist always looks forward to is San Diego. Accompanied by an intimate setting with a spacious pit and an overlooking balcony, The North Park Observatory is the perfect venue for artists who want an intimate experience with their fans. “I just wanna let y’all know, San Diego has been my favorite show” said Eric. “And I don’t just say that shit to any venue,” he added after. The excitement from the Zombies was evident from the jump. They started the set off with Jewice channeling his best Bruce Buffer impression and announcing the group as a whole. The first track they played was “The Odyssey,” the opening track from their debut album and they all came out one after another displaying unforgettable energy and precise bars over instrumentals. This was the most impressive part of the show as the Zombies are all known for their machine gun speed flows; especially Jewice. They all 3 hit every bar and every line with the precision of trained snipers. The trio then kicked off fan favorites “Bounce” and “Good Grief” before going into a five minute tribute to the late Capital STEEZ in which they got the crowd to join in on a “RIP Steelo” chant which was then followed by similar tributes to Biggie Smalls and Tupac.

One of the more impressive parts of the show was the amount of detail that was put into the stage props and lighting. The Zombies were accompanied by a screen behind them that was portraying wavy acid inspired art videos the whole night. Though that was trippy in itself, during the song “This Is It,” the lights would flash like strobe lights perfectly on cue with the drum beat. The amount of effort they put into their live shows was very evident as the crew rarely looked gassed or missed a bar as they went from song to song turning up with energy that even Desiigner could appreciate. Also, notable was how well the trio engaged with their fans during the show. I had the pleasure of seeing them in Tempe, Arizona in 2013, and although that show was one of the most fun I’ve been to, the group has definitely grown in this area tremendously. They had their crowd hanging on to their every word, teasing unreleased material and even having everybody turn to their neighbor and say I love you at the end of the show.

I LOVE U SAN DIEGO BEST SHOW EVER pic.twitter.com/polpIuFIez

— Mel (@AsapTwelvyy) May 1, 2016

In total, Flatbush blessed the crowd with about 18-20 songs in total for a fantastically crafted performance. Some of the highlight songs from the show were “RIPCD,” “Fly Away” and “222” which showed Erick rapping acapella at the end of the track. Though those tracks were exciting in their own right, the best three songs from the night by far were “Ignorance Is Bliss,” “New Phone, Who Dis?” and weed-head favorite “Smoke Break (Interlude).” The latter was accompanied by the screen behind the group displaying videos of old white folks taking some mean bong rips, which cued the crowd to light up themselves during the vibey smoker’s anthem. “Ignorance Is Bliss” and “New Phone, Who Dis?” were incredibly live though, and were without a doubt the highlights from the evening with the trio showing out their best dance moves and culminating with Meech doing a stage dive. The Brooklyn natives even managed to let their political stance be known. “I’m not sure if you guys f**k with politics and pay attention or any of that, but if you want a better future you have to make sure in November, you do NOT vote for Donald Trump” Jewice said to the crowd which was followed by a “F**k Donald Trump chant” that was sang in unison as if it was part of the Zombie discography.

The energy was incredible, the smoke was heavy, and the sold out crowd was at the will of the performers, hanging on to every word. My evening with Flatbush was live to say the least; if you’ve never had the chance to see the group in action, you’re missing out. They’re easily one of the best live shows in Hip-Hop right now, and with them selling out almost every stop on their tour, good luck finding a ticket. Take a look at some of the photos taken from the show and check out the rest of the tour dates below to catch the tour in your city. Also, be sure to check out 3001: A Laced Odyssey in stores now and available on iTunes, Spotify, and of course Tidal.

The Zombies of Flatbush have finally come through with their album, 3001: A Laced Odyssey. What is there to find within this 12-track body of work? There’s plenty to explore as you enter their space (double entendre). It’s Brooklyn meets a space voyage. As they find themselves usually doing, they elevate the mind in the form of words and Erick Arc Elliot production. There is a lot of growth from Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice, and Erick. The “Beast Coast” movement continues to sprout with this new release from Flatbush Zombies.

“Bounce” was released as a single in the earlier part of February. Arguably being one of the few tracks that feel like vintage Flatbush, the title was relevant to the feel of the production.

You may have noticed Kanye West’s tweets that spoke on the death of CD’s. We are unlikely to ever get a physical copy of a Kanye West CD, and the same may go for the Zombies.

During their track “R.I.P.C.D.,” they speak on the generational changes that we’re in the midst of.

“R.I.P. to the CD can’t even play my hits, cause new computer sh*t without the means to play this sh*t.”

The group gets nostalgic during the song, saying “reload the memory, they got me feeling like we’re nothing like we used to be.”

An advantage to listening to this project, is that it doesn’t take long for the group to dive into the song, letting you decide if you like the song early on.

However, we encourage that you check out their debut album all the way through, if time is on your side. Enjoy your listen.
