Da YoungFellaz link with Jae Tips, Cory Gunz, Just and DUB for the cypher centric “FDR Drive.” It’s always a good thing when a record has a packed lineup of intricate rhymers and “FDR Drive” lives up to that expectation. Producer HitMakerDot’s implementation of Billy Joel’s “New York State Of Mind” lends way to a sample from Mase’s infectious and memorable “24 Hours To Live,” setting the stage for Da YoungFellaz and company to go on a lyrical escapade. The record’s energy is overpowering as each MC demands the listeners attention. While it’s typically expected for a writer to pick a standout verse, doing so on this record would be a disservice to all six lyricists. “FDR Drive” IS New York Hip-Hop.

New Music: Jelacee – “Get Ur Freak On”

When was the last time you listened to Missy Elliot‘s 2001 hit, “Get Your Freak On“? Yesterday, hopefully. No doubt you thought Timbaland‘s Bhangra inspired beat still sounded just as hot as when it topped the Billboard 100 nearly 12 years ago. Last Thursday, Jelacee (half of the British production duo Stooki Sound) paid #tbt homage to GYFO with a free release of his take on Missy‘s iconic jam. Jelacee‘s “Get Your Freak On” 2.0 remixes the well-known track, covers it with a contemporary trap sound, and layers it up with electronic synthesizers and filters to create a fresh, new 2013 party banger. Song Premiere: Ekha – “Vedette”

Soul trio Ekha is releasing their album BCWTIOT on July 9th via LA audiovisual label Daylight Curfew. The group is composed of vocalist Thimali Kodikara and producers Devang Shah and DJ Jad1. Their sound is soulful, but in an affective rather than aesthetic way. In other words, their music feels like soul even though it doesn’t necessarily sound like it. They strip soul down purely to its intense affect.

But it’s not minimalism. On “Vedette,” which is named after a friend of the group, Ekha aims high, incorporating elements of ska, dub, jazz, trip-hop and soul. “This can’t be real,” Kodikara sings. But yes it is. And it sounds glorious. Listen and download below.
