____

At this point if you’re plugged into relevant underground rap music you understand how sure we all are going into a single from Nolan the Ninja, Quelle Chris and Denmark Vessey. Nolan, in a short amount of time, gained our trust. Chris and Vessey a while ago. It feels right to note their fearlessness and experimentation, so them three coming together is cool. And exciting for listeners. It’s safe to say that Nolan sticks to what he’s good at – lyrical, timely machine gun like bars and tipping the scale on the rather lo-fi, 90’s side. But collaborations like these show glimpses of an early passionate emcee who is barely just getting started. He’s young. Watching him mature via music should be eye opening (young artists take note).

“Modesty”, the second leak from Nolan’s forthcoming YEN lp, encourages being more like the three of them – modest. Having worked with Nolan on a few occasions we can comfortably say that his aura is indeed modest for a rather larger guy with large talent. He does carry himself humbly and is respectful. The confidence in his artistry, however, isn’t hard to find – both here and the first leak “14K“. Denmark Vessey held the production down. A humble head nodder. I’m not sure how much Vessey production you’ll find out here recently – his last Mello Music Group effort entirely prodcued by Gensu Dean (do the Whole Food lp now if you haven’t and thank us later).

Quelle Chris is his usual self – pretty care-free but actually always very in tune no matter how far in space tripping he may seem. That dude is a damn genius. And cares about the damn art – all facets. It’s beyond welcomed and cool to hear next to Nolan’s straight forward, direct darts. Score, gentlemen.

Play the single 200 times below and tell your aunts, uncles, moms and neighborhoods to do the same. Maybe you’re a notch more excited for the YEN lp now. Good. You honestly should be. The pre-order links are at the bottom of this feature if you’re into pre-ordering stuff. Peace and love.

It’s 2016. Technology (though effective for a while) consumes us. For better or for worse, it’s justifiably the blame for guiding much of our train of thought. And actions. And attention. To some degree, most non-senior citizens will agree. Right? But memories will forever remain precious and hind site will always be 20/20 – in most cases.

With that being said, Kentucky wordsmith Allen Poe teamed up with producer/emcee Denmark Vessey to paint his short, nostalgic canvas and create “Memory”. It’s beautiful and poetically complex. Those familiar with Denmark‘s soundscapes and rhymes shouldn’t be too surprised by Poe‘s execution here. The single’s content is not as complex as, say, an MF DOOM or Dr. Octagon record, but you may have to actually listen to the words and piece together whatever forms naturally. A bit more refreshing than the mindless, spoon-fed doses of material we’re offered on most radio today.

Poe’s love for poetry is undeniable to the average listener. “Memory” is a cool grey dart, introspective and executed perfectly. A pinball loosely bouncing through memory, at the end of the run leaving listeners reminded how important each moment is. Be present.

That’s enough out of us, enjoy the record. One love:

While we’re used to hearing J57 behind the boards, for Wax Aesthetic he’s mostly behind the mic, showcasing his rhymes and his flows. We already got a taste of his rapping ability when we premiered the EP’s first track, “Been a Long Time,” a few weeks ago, but the EP offers the entire meal. Clocking in at a little under 20 minutes, the EP is a bit brief, but it’s a dynamic ride throughout, featuring guest appearances from ATR, 777, Denmark Vessey, Tenacity, Mike Maven, Akie Bermiss, Co$$, Johaz, Choosey and more, as well as solid production from Exile, Deejay Element and of course, J57 himself. Produced by Exile, “Been a Long Time” is the first single from J57‘s upcoming EP, Wax Aesthetic, which will be J57 first solo project solely as an emcee. While J57 has had more than a few verses on a few Brown Bag All Stars projects, “Been a Long Time” is the perfect reminder that while he doesn’t regularly rap, he’s by no means lost his edge. On “Been a Long Time,” he delivers confident bars over Exile‘s excellent scratches and smooth production. Singer ATR, who’s featured on Koncept and J57‘s forthcoming projects, delivers as well, contributing a slightly haunting chorus that coolly reverberates Exile‘s dulled bass.

Though brief (2:21), the overall product is a solid track. Check it out below and look out for Wax Aesthetic on January 28th. In addition to ATR and Exile, the EP will also feature contributions from F. Virtue, Mike Maven, Akie Bermiss, Johaz, Denmark Vessey, Choosey and Co$$.
