#RESPECT. The Album: Danny Matos – ‘The Tarmac’

For up-and-coming New York rapper Danny Matos, The Tarmac is the culmination of hard work, determination, and incredible skill. He’s dropped some serious heat this past year, kicking off with the well received Hangar EP in addition to various loosies. But it’s The Tarmac that pulls it all together, showcasing one of the city’s bright young talents.

At a concise and cohesive ten tracks, this project hits its stride immediately, pulling in listeners with the powerful lead single, “Fought The Devil” and refusing to let go. That’s because Matos and his go-to producers, Rusty Mack and The Red Walrus, put their all into what they create. Where his passionate delivery provides a view into the fire in his belly, the musical duo’s colorful instrumentals display their unique approach, complementing each other perfectly.

That goes for any topic Matos decides to tackle. He deftly takes on difficult subject matter including depression (“Fought The Devil”), heartbreak (“Too Soon”), and society’s view of women and men (the brilliant one-two punch of “Red Carpet Globe (Animus)” and “Stay Together (Anima).” While these topics can seem heavy, there’s also a swagger to Matos and how he views his own abilities. He brags and boasts his way through several cuts, including “Music Thing” and “Dice,” but it’s never a braggadocio overload from the kid.

“This project shows some confidence, but it also shows some darkness,” Matos explains. “Whether people admit that or not, there’s no escaping it. Human beings have a duality within them at all times, and we’re constantly blurring the lines between both of our sides. I think I’m just way more comfortable with it now.”

That comfort allows him to open up and flex, sometimes even on the same track. While closer “Bring Me” isn’t super-heavy on bravado, it does take some moxie to throw caution to the wind like he does on that track. When he croons, “I don’t know where I’m going, but I know I gotta bring me,” you believe it—and you’re also wishing him the best. Danny Matos’ music is potent for reasons beyond his strong songwriting and keen ear for production (from Rusty Mack and The Red Walrus). It’s his honesty that often makes his work so engaging, and that’s especially apparent on new single “Too Soon,” the latest leak taken from his upcoming album, The Tarmac.

What makes “Too Soon” so relatable is the way in which he addresses heartbreak. There’s no infidelity or lies here, just two people in love who are also afraid of commitment. Like many topics Matos has covered thus far, this too is one that so many of us have experienced. It’s more than just the subject matter that hits home, because it wouldn’t resonate so strongly if he didn’t deliver with such passion.

Matos, with some help from guest vocalist Taylor, delivers line after line of relatable material, all of which is emphasized by the layered, lively production of Rusty Mack and The Red Walrus. From “Maybe we are/ Giving up too soon” to “I don’t want to be scared/ To get to know you deep,” you can hear Matos working out where things went wrong, and how to move forward. However, what if the fear never subsides? That’s up to him (and his listeners) to answer on his own.

New Music: Danny Matos (Ft. Joie Giordano) – “Stay Together (Anima)”

Whether peering inside himself or at our society, New Yorker Danny Matos has a sharp and unique perspective that ultimately aims to help the greater-good. That much is evident on “Stay Together (Anima),” a searing takedown of the expectations placed on men, and relationships.

Known for his brimming pen game, Matos uses his gift to tackle troubled relationships torn apart by outside forces including the intensity of one’s career goals, and the desire to seek out others. It doesn’t have to be that way, though, and guest vocalist Joie Giordano (she’s also on lead single “Fought The Devil”) drives that point home throughout the track. In addition to slaying the hook, she closes the song with a heartfelt message: “If only we made an effort/ To make an effort/ To stay together.”

You can hear the pain and anguish in Giordano and Matos’ vocals here, providing even more weight to an already-heavy subject. That being said, their songwriting is strong enough that nothing feels plodding or overwrought, only honest. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they have the skillful musicianship ofRusty Mack and The Red Walrus providing the foundation on “Stay Together,” the second single from Matos’ upcoming album, The Tarmac.

With his new single “Fought The Devil,” New York rapper Danny Matos is providing a voice for anyone who’s ever struggled with depression, anxiety, or any mental illness that tries to convince you that you’re just not good enough.

In this case, the devil that Matos, and so many young people in our country are fighting, is the one that lies within. It’s that voice in your head that constantly tries to pull you down and cause inner turmoil, even when nothing’s wrong. Plenty of us have been there, and it’s important to remember that there’s always a way out of it.

Matos’ words serve as a reminder of that notion, because he makes it clear to his listeners that they’re not alone—and that they can get through it. And he’s doing so with one of his most powerful and beautifully written songs to date, which stems from his forthcoming full-length album, The Tarmac.

RESPECT. The Track: Danny Matos – “Everything”

If you got hipped to the music of rising New York rapper Danny Matos last December when he dropped “New Genre,” then you know that dude’s certainly delivered when it comes to releasing fresh, engaging material. January brought the release of his The Hangar EP, an impressive display of reflection and personal struggles pulled together by Matos’ songwriting and ear for production. And since then, he’s only continued working and putting out tracks, with the moody “Everything” being his latest.

Like everything else the NYC spitter has shared with the world these past six months, this track finds him collaborating with Rusty Mack. For those unfamiliar, Mack is member of Surf School, an imprint/collective of artists overseen by super-producer Harry Fraud. And on “Everything,” Mack again proves that he deserves any accolades thrown his way, as he blends jangly guitars, bright piano keys, and rich bass on an instrumental brimming with musical Easter eggs.

It’s the perfect backdrop for the emotional weight of Matos’ verses and chorus, the latter of which may be his best yet. He croons about loss and the fact that time is both everything and nothing at once, hinting at the fact that while time can indeed all wounds, you also have to live through it. Matos explores those concepts with his bars that are equally heavy and sharp, making for a cut that requires some repeated listens. “Everything” is now available for purchase through all major digital retailers, and can be streamed in its entirety right here, courtesy of RESPECT.

EP Stream: Danny Matos – ‘The Hangar’

NYC has a new emcee to join the ranks of the culture’s birthplace and his name is Danny Matos. We’ve been doing our best to keep you up to speed with the promising artist’ inaugural effort, The Hangar, as we’ve featured both of the project’s promotional leaks (“New Genre,” and “Let Go”) and today, we’re pleased to share the full EP. Produced entirely by Surf School’s Rusty Mack with additional production support lent by the Red Walrus, Matos’ seven track effort puts his creative range on display, showcasing his pension for songwriting and song structure, while also demonstrating that he’s got rapping fundamentals to boot.

The project’s overarching theme seems centered around honesty, a proclamation highlighted on the EP’s aforementioned opener, “New Genre.” This concept continues on “Somebody,” which addresses our desire for self improvement, while “Let Go” reminds us that in pursuit of this quest, we need to travel light if we plan to go far. The project continues with tales of heartbreak, self awareness, and learning to live in the moment, as addressed on “F*ck My Head Up,” “Mixed Priorities (Hearsay),” and “Here Now,” respectively. The closer, “On Fire,” is perhaps the most metaphorical record where Danny personifies the bright lights and attractions of the city to that of a panderer; although the exterior may seem coated in gold, what lies beneath is entrenched in corruption, greed and decay.

Danny Matos Drops Off His Latest “Let Go” (Audio)

And this brings us back to honesty. It’s a broad term. Does the average listener today value an honest artist? True, transparent lyrics don’t necessarily come a dime a dozen. But when they do it is special. It’s crucial in fact, in the midst of illusion and hyper-fantasy that we hear often on the mainstream side.

With that comes New York emcee Danny Matos, here with the second leak off of his forthcoming ‘The Hangar EP’ (01/08). If you missed the RESPECT. Magazine premiere of his first “New Genre” release, you should probably do that now. Rusty Mack, handling the production on the entire EP, provides incredible canvases for Danny to work on. Their chemistry is undeniable and the whole project was recorded together – yet another commendable note.

“I’m being open and holding a mirror to myself with this project..”
