One of the most beautiful things about music is watching a gifted artist in the beginnings of his or her career, moments before the world takes notice and said talent is catapulted to the highest heights of success. With that said, here’s a new artist for your radar: Baltimore’s Brittany Anderson is ready for that spotlight, having liberated her debut single titled “Black Lipstick” — a powerful, soulful number with an avant-garde vibe. On the track, Anderson juxtaposes the makeup that she dons with being pushed to the edge thanks to a wrongful significant other (“black lipstick on a bullet,” “only makeup in this bodybag”). The dark, emotional lyrics (and her voice!), mixed with Jay The Great‘s genre-bending production makes for audio perfection in the veins of a Jasmine Sullivan or Jhené Aiko. Make no mistake, though: Anderson’s sound is definitely all her own.
