Young Money, Old News? Skepta Confirms Drake Addition to BBK

After reaching record breaking status with last week’s release of VIEWS, Canadian superstar Drake has been the talk of the town and under the microscope. During the first verse of “Weston Road Flows,” the Boy made the claim, “Shout out to KD/We relate we get the same attention” and now it seems the lyric has come to fruition. In February, Drake took to Instagram to announce that he had signed to London sensation Skepta’s label BBK. With details being scarce and the deal having obvious hurdles such as the infamous Birdman’s approval, fans of both artists were hesitant to celebrate the partnership quite yet. It seems now that those fans can gather up more excitement as Skepta recently confirmed Drake’s apparent signing during an excellent interview with Timeout London.

While the details are still limited at best, the Section Boyz leader did offer his comments on the situation. “We’re putting together an official worldwide BBK label.” The London emcee says, “But we haven’t talked about how it’ll work yet. It’ll be separate to his existing contracts. Trust me, I am not gonna sue Lil’ Wayne.” With Lil’ Wayne engaging in his own battles with the Cash Money lawyer team, Weezy would most likely be the least of Skepta’s worries if he wants to bring Drake to the London based label. Another question that arises would be how it effects Drake’s OVO label? OVO Sound has built quite the roster over in the 6 with PartyNextDoor and Majid Jordan reaching pop success as well as their newest signees DVSN who have been making waves with their recently released debut album SEPT. 5TH.

Despite all of the drama surrounding the business issues, the pairing of the two would be great musically. Though the duo only has one officially released collaboration with last year’s remix of Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba,” the success of that song combined with the rumored closeness between the two, highlighted with Drake’s BBK tattoo, could only be a positive move for each side. Hopefully with the recent success of both VIEWS and Skepta’s Konnichiwa, the two will now have the time to work out the details and get this deal on track.

Drake Signs To Skepta’s ‘Boy Better Know’ Label

Drake signs to Skepta’s ‘Boy Better Know’ label. Drizzy’s support of Skepta, ‘BBK,’ and UK’s Grime scene all together is nothing new, just now a little closer to home. Since Drake performed with Rihanna at last night’s 2016 BRIT Awards, there’s no better time to announce you’re signing to an independent British grime label. The writing was on the proverbial wall when Drake got a ‘BBK’ tattoo on his shoulder last October, but now that the ink has metaphorically transferred from skin to paper, what does it really all mean? Is there a possibility he isn’t ACTUALLY signed? And what impact does it have with OVO sound’s roster moving forward. As the details unfold, Drake’s consistent reign as one of music’s most elite will surely remain in tact. Most likely, (this is purely my speculation) Drizzy’s “partnership” with ‘BBK‘ affords him the chance to further align himself with a major movement from the UK, allowing for more collaborative process, ultimately capturing what’s left of the Grime fanbase that weren’t already fans of his to begin with. Between Cash Money, Young Money, OVO, and now BBK, it’s going to be interesting to watch where (and how) all of the pieces fit. Chase and Status announce “London Bars Vol. 1”, teaming up with Frisco for “Funny”

While fans eagerly await the release of their new album, London producer duo Chase and Status have announced their London Bars series, which will consist of collaborations with some of the UK’s best.

Kicking things off, Chase and Status call on BBK’s Frisco for “Funny”. Watch as Frisco hits the studio spitting bar after bar, reminding us that Grime is in fact very much alive and well.
