After dropping the visual treatment for “Men Are Mortals” off of this year’s Kool Herc: Fertile Crescent, the Sandman has provided a video for the lead track off his other EP from this year, All That I Hold Dear. The true fun of the wide-shot clip for “King Kong,” apart from the playfully powerful lyrics–par for the course for Sandman–is the sly reveal of the video’s premise. We open up on Boy Sand sitting, munching a banana–seemingly just a sly nod to the song’s title and hook–but the subtle and funny ape-mannerisms foretell what’s coming. The intricate, insightful, and surprisingly gentle verse unfolds, and we watch as Sandman reveals himself to be more and more primal: he tosses his peel, gets bugs picked off of him, beats his chest, and even faces off with a beta-male. It’s an interesting contrast, one that serves up a solid message: there’s more to a beasts than beastliness. Enjoy “King Kong” below, and check out our interview of Homeboy Sandman from last year as well as our concert review of a recent show.
