After a surprisingly long delay, New Jersey rapper and singer Stori finally brings us #BADASSDAME, her debut mixtape. We’ve been anticipating it since we interviewed her back in June, so it’s nice for it to have finally made it out of the tunnel. This is Stori‘s first cohesive body of work, so it really is a proper introduction. Vacillating between singing and rapping as well as various song structures, Stori showcases her versatility on all fronts, especially singing. Her songs have interpolations of reggae, pop and soul, in addition to R&B. The rapping isn’t as versatile, but Stori seems more interested in melodies than percussion, so that’s to be expected.
During our interview, Stori said that this tape could serve as the soundtrack to Set it Off or Tank Girl. The tape must have changed since then; #BADASSDAME feels more like the soundtrack to Million Dollar Baby. But that’s perfectly fine. Dancing around the ring, Stori uses her hard-earned and graceful skills to simultaneously awe the crowd and dizzy her opponents. This is something you want to see (hear). Download it or stream it below.
