Lupe Fiasco recently dropped the first single off his upcoming album, Food and Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album, due out later this year. For the song, Lupe decided to sample the hip-hop classic “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.),” much to the dismay of the song’s producer, Pete Rock.
Rock fired off for hours on Twitter, claiming the sample was disrespectful and poorly done. 9th Wonder also voiced his distaste for the move, claiming Lupe’s camp should have reached out for a blessing.
Lupe gave an interview over at Ruby Hornet and discussed the sample:
“All the credit goes to my partner and manager Chill, he just felt like it was time to bring back a joint… Go back and take one of the iconic records of Hip Hop and put a new spin on it and put it back out there. I spit on it a couple times before, some mixtape stuff back in the day, Chill felt it needed a bigger look than that.”
Read a selection of Pete Rock’s tweets below and stream Lupe’s song. Do you agree with the anger or is it being overblown?
