Sylvia Thomas is a mainstream minister who created the Crucifixion series stage plays that was inspired by James Weldon Johnson‘s poem “The Crucifixion.” As Tyler Perry‘s cousin, Thomas is all about bringing a descriptive plot to her stage plays. It shows that the black woman carries the most powerful story and message across the world. We have caught up with Sylvia about what made her start doing the series, the message behind it and more.
RESPECT.: What made you start the Crucifixion series?
As a young girl, my mother, Pastor Thelma C. Thomas, introduced me to James Weldon Johnson‘s poem entitled “The Crucifixion,” and I would recite it as a monologue on Easter Sunday. It was powerful and anointed and would leave the audience speechless and standing with applause. So when I went through one of the darkest times of my life, God spoke to me in the night and literally gave me every word and direction on how to transform that poem into the New Millennium Crucifixion” National Touring Stage Play that’s now presented to the World.
RESPECT.: You are the first mainstream gospel stage play to minister, what message do you want to get across?
The New Millennium Crucifixion has a powerful unforgettable message. It showcases the least of us, a black woman, chosen to carry the most powerful story and message across the world that convicts the mighty and reminds us to look back to the cross where the Blood of Jesus was shed to bring us into VICTORY over Hatred, Racism, Social Injustices, and massive world spread Disease. Through Christ, the only way, the only Redemption, do we as a people rise above the calamities of this World and experience true Love, Forgiveness, and the Power of Unity for ALL Mankind.
RESPECT.: What is the descriptive plot or story about the stage play?
Come journey through the New Millennium “Crucifixion” story of a modern day American family whose teenage daughter’s horrendous trials and tribulations mirror that of Christ. The Williams Family, James (Father) and Irene (Mother), ban together to fight demonic influences in schools and neighborhood gangs that are trying to destroy their teenage daughter, Angela, when her unique and supernatural gifts and behavior are finally exposed to the world. Will the parent’s ferocious protection go beyond the walls to protect their daughter, will Angela’s life be completely destroyed by a world that’s afraid of the unknown and what they don’t understand, or will Angela’s suffering, ridicule, and alienation lead an entire community to spiritual victory? Don’t Miss America’s most sought after National Stage Play, The New Millennium “Crucifixion” Live on Stage! The Phenomenal Interactive Production that will change your life! I saw that it was a festival circuit last year. You started with two major cities and later ventured out to all over the world, tell us a little bit about that.
Our debut in Atlanta, GA was exhilarating and exciting. The people and the industry VIPs’ support and reaction to the Play was absolutely phenomenal and solidified that we have a Powerful and Magnificent HIT on our hands! We are in the process of adding more major cities to the National Tour and can’t wait to hit the road.
RESPECT.: With quarantine and pandemic that is going on, what were some things that you have done? Is this normal to you or different?
The pandemic has definitely affected things. We have not been able to tour because of it, but we have used this time to bring in other possible investors who never would’ve received a chance to invest and allowed me some much needed down time with my family. No this is definitely not normal, and I am constantly praying for the welfare of our nation and our world.
RESPECT.: As your cousin, Tyler Perry, being in stage plays, was it him who made you start doing the same?
I am very proud of my cousin Tyler, but no he was not my influence. My mother, Pastor Thelma C. Thomas, an Amazing, Powerful, Talented, and Anointed woman of God is truly the Inspiration behind myself and her nephew, Tyler. She began acting, writing, and directing poems and plays at a very early age, and when she had children, nieces, and nephews, she started training us and exposing us to the theatrical arts. Actually my mother’s children, myself, Pastor Troy N Thomas (World-wide Evangelist and Philathropist), Monica Thomas, and Valerie Thomas, began doing Plays and acting long before Tyler. It truy would not be a Sylvia Thomas or a Tyler Perry as you know us without my mother, Pastor Thelma Campbell-Thomas. She is highly respected, loved, and honored in our family. She’s one-of -a-kind!
