The life of an influencer, as it may seem – free meals, picture-perfect snaps, and glamorous holidays, right? It can definitely look that way from the exterior, but the reality is far away from what it appears. Having a lot of reach also indicates having a lot of responsibility. What does this mean for the influencers, or as one may call them, the new kind of celebdom? On one hand where most have, in a very unusual way, chosen to launch their blogs, YouTube channels, start-up careers on the internet and rake in money, the other few have risen to stardom by some motivational speeches online or some ‘super’ comedy videos.
While it is an art to address the masses and unintentionally, themselves, with the diverse and dynamic medium of social media, it comes with a lot of responsibility too. As someone with a million followers on Instagram alone, Mehdi Mobarakeh, an Iranian businessman turned lifestyle influencer, understands the amount of work, efforts, and time that goes into creating content and working with brands to make an impact on the lives of the recipients.
The young entrepreneur, who started his professional journey by working on road and construction projects, and eventually, real estate and import-export business, realizes the reach of each of his post and the effect it can have on his virtual family. And hence, even though he aspires to be at the top of the list, his focus remains on churning content that is positive, powerful, and purposeful to the ones consuming it. To this, he also adds, “I guess, this ideology holds true for most of us in this industry. We are in this game not only because the numbers are driving us to create content but also due to the fact that we genuinely want to help our audiences lead better lives in some aspect or another. When I ventured into the social media influencer market, my only goal was to share motivational content that encourages people to step out of their comfort zones to find success, the way I did. So far, I have been considerably successful in doing so. I hope to continue inspiring people.”
For someone like Mehdi who juggles his time between Iran and Turkey and also between his business and social media tasks, maintaining consistency to portray a dream-like life of an influencer isn’t easy, he claims. “To be honest, when I started, being an influencer seemed like leading an easy life. However, as my work developed over the years with clients, brands, and agencies, and as the industry flourished and established itself, I began to notice the expertise that an influencer is expected to put in,” added Mehdi.
Today, with a massive virtual following and overwhelmingly encouraging support, Mehdi strongly advocates Instagram as a platform and recommends aspirants to utilize it to put out positive messages, seek inspiration, develop healthier relationships, or simply get entertained.
As a concluding remark, Mehdi also shares, “While this world of social media and influencer marketing has given a boost to a lot of people worldwide, the constant scrutiny, criticism, trolling, and demand for perfection cannot be ignored. For us, influencers, the terms ‘power’ and ‘responsibility’ go hand in hand.”
