Florida entrepreneur Michael Murphy (@realmikemurphy) went from a teenage car washer to CEO and President of Murphy Auto Group (MAG). All in all, he owns and operates: five automotive dealerships, a management company, an advertising company. He also has two dealer-owned warranty companies, multiple LLCs, and real estate companies. He revealed some keys to his success in a personal interview.
Michael related, “When I started with little experience, the biggest things I could rely on were the policies, processes, and procedures that I inherited from my dad. With my dad’s help, I was able to adopt all these principles and adapt them to a digital world that is heavily based on social media influence and online consumerism. Now, I want to share what I have learned with everyone.
Like many young entrepreneurs, Murphy faced challenges. He disclosed what he felt were the biggest obstacles. He says, “For most people, it is going from an employee-based mindset to an employer mindset. Lucky for me I was raised to think like an employer. Next is most start-up entrepreneurs are natural salespeople that lack the skill set needed. These skills include accounting knowledge, employment law, operations management, team building (hiring, onboarding, evaluating, developing, and replacing of employees)”. Finally, he leaves other young entrepreneurs with a key nugget of advice, “Fear equals motivation! What you are afraid of can make you stronger and grow your courage”.
