Toronto artist BLACKKINGKOFI recently released a slew of new music recently but now, his latest dance/rap hybrid uptempo number “Tropics” is catching some traction, especially in his native of Trinidad & Tobago. It forces you to dance, get up and stay up. We caught up with him recently to get some insight into the phenomenon and he had plenty to say:
“I heard the beat for Tropics by a producer called Bravestar instantly the melody for the hook came to my head. I began writing to it and came up with the first verse which is all based on real-life events. I lost countless friends back in Trinidad to gun violence and over gambling dice and cards and other gang-related beefs”
The hybrid nature of his music is an often asked question:
“I feel like it’s the first hip-hop song you could play at Caribana. In a generation full of clones and look alikes I want to be myself and make the music i enjoy.”
Although a Torontonian, he definitely sounds a “certain” way: “my accent is from four years of moving back to Canada, I feel like my Trinidadian accent evolved with the Toronto lingo which created my “sound” – It got crazy when I linked up with Trinidadian comedian Wetman Kenrick (who is gaining 1k + followers a day on all his socials) did a viral parody video to the song and now the whole island knows the song.” The track was released in Feb 2019 and has done 200k streams independently.
