Chicago artist SoloSam has been making waves with his unique take on music. Having already made his mark on the football field (he played for Valparaiso), the deep-voiced emcee now delivers cinematic audio cuts for his exponentionally-growing fanbase.
A student of Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, The Cool Kids and J. Cole, SoloSam made his first big entry into the proverbial game via 2016’s EPOCH before landing on all of your favorite blogsites with last year’s Itis, a 7-track showcase of his rapping and production skills. This year, he’s served up notable singles (including “Highly Favored” and the more recent banger “Fire” alongside once-masked DJ-producer UZ) and the must-listen EP Plated.
In a past interview, he described what sets himself apart from his peers, which might be his best description overall:
The thing that not necessarily separates me from other Chicago artists but that solidifies me as a person is the way I look at the significance of what rap is. I know the strength of what I’m doing, and therefore, I’m able to create music that’s not focussed on what’s around me or influenced by what everybody else is making. I can make music for the purpose of making music. Music is one of the purest things ever. It’s untouched. I’m able to dial in on the growth of my own music.
