Ann Marie has been buzzing in the game for a minute now. With her series, of Tripolar, we are definitely getting a part three soon! The Chicago native has been putting her music on the map in the r&b scene by landing a deal with Interscope Records. With special appearances with Jeremih, Calboy, Q Money and Sonta, Ann Marie has introduced a seductive yet sexy new sound and voice. She consistently put bodies of work onto the scene and has been an exceptional artist we love to hear!
We caught up with Ann Marie and discussed her recent album, Pretty Psycho, her concepts with the visual “My Body,” and more.
RESPECT.: Why did you name the album Pretty Psycho?
I feel like a lot of females can relate to the title, we all have our psycho moments and I think everyone has at least two sides to it. My album has it’s pretty moments like “My Body” and “Touch Me” and the psycho moments in songs like “Karma.”
RESPECT.: What was your favorite track to make while making the album? Why?
I stepped out of my element when I wrote “My Body.” I adapted a Caribbean vibe and tempo and played around with different melodies. It was a different vibe for me, but I think it came out incredible and I am glad to see that my fans like it a lot too.
RESPECT.: Who is someone you want to collaborate within the studio? Why?
Drake! Because he is such a dope and versatile artist. I relate to his artistry — he raps, he sings, plus he’s been super consistent and at the top for a long time. You gotta respect that
RESPECT.: What song can you put out to the audience or fan who hasn’t heard of your music? Why?
Has to be “Secret,” it’s a bop, and I feel like a lot of people can relate to what I am singing in it.
RESPECT.: Define RESPECT.
To admire and treat someone well.
RESPECT.: Tell us what was the video concept of “Karma?”
Letting n*ggas know that they just can’t do anything to a female, because karma will make sure it comes back to bite them in the ass.
RESPECT.: Will you be releasing any new songs soon? Will there be a Tripolar Part 3 soon?
Yes, I am constantly in the studio and recording. I want to get as much music done ahead of time and start developing music video concepts around them. And yes, I am thinking about working on a Tripolar 3 but nothing confirmed yet!
RESPECT.: With the sequel of Tripolar, do you think your growth, as an artist, from then to now with the new album you had released since, you gained more fans?
Yes, I think with every project and video I release, my fan base keeps growing and I am super excited to see what the future holds.
RESPECT.: With your “My Body,” visual, it reminds me of the early ‘00s with the Aaliyah vibes. Tell us more about the track and the video concept of that?
It’s a super fun, flirty song that you can listen to when you’re getting dressed for the club or even when you’re AT the club and I wanted the video to match that vibe of the song. What better way to celebrate the sunset in Miami than on a boat and bonfire with friends.
RESPECT.: Do you think R&B is coming back in the new era?
Yes, I think it is and I’m part of the movement alongside some other dope females. I’m really rocking with H.E.R, Summer Walker, Teyana Taylor right now — they’re all part of this resurgence of R&B.
