I know you have seen the Philadelphia native Sy Mosquiat on videos of him freestyling. He is known for his buzzing campaign “365 Days of Grease” to where he drops a new freestyle everyday of the year of 2018 on his Instagram page. He recently released his five-track EP, It’s Too Late, to prove why he is so versatile with his lyrics. We caught up with the “Can’t Catch a Vibe” rapper and discussed what made him do the campaign of 365 freestyles, his latest EP and more below.
By doing the freestyles, did it inspire you to create more music or do you feel like it slowed you down?
It made the creating process easier for me. These days making a rap or a song is like second nature, because I made it such a habit. It’s like brushing my teeth now, I do it every day. So the music is really a breeze.
How did you get the name Sy Mosquiat? What does it mean or represent?
My nickname is Sy and Mosquiat. It is a spin-off from Basquiat, who is my favorite artist and one of my biggest inspirations.
What made you want to drop 365 freestyles of the year 2018?
Really, it was a suggestion made by my friends that I was one hundred percent against at first. But then, they talked me into it doing it.
Who or what can you say who inspired you to do the freestyles on a daily basis?
My love for music and the arts. I like challenges that comes my way, and I’m a firm believer of pushing myself to the limit.
Define RESPECT.
To me, respect is accepting for being who you are. Respect is demanded with character.
With your EP, ‘Its Too Late,’ what made you want to name that? Is there a meaning behind it?
I felt like I was at a point in my career where everybody was trying to make “u-turns” and the statement “it’s too late” is just me stating don’t try to come back in my life now because it’s too late.
Tell us more about your clothing brand. How did it begin?
LoveYaFace is a brand based on building self-esteem in individuals. It started in 2011. Since then, it has reached a diverse fan base. Several celebrities have worn and supported the brand. The brand is pushing every day to spread the message.
With the “365 Days of Grease,” what has been the most challenge part of the campaign?
Hmmm.. tough question. The toughest part are my busy days, when I look up and it is 1:00 a.m., and I still didn’t put up the “Grease” video so I had to do it.
How was it performing at Made In America?
It was awesome, definitely in my top three performances to date.
You just dropped another EP to kick the year off. What made you return with another project so soon? What is your favorite track on YFRFR?
Just to outwork these cats. The goal is to keep dropping and stay consistent in this climate of music. I’d say my favorite tracks are: “2 AM” with Quilly and “We Loaded with Leaf Ward” with Mosquiat.
