Mookie Mardi Gra has been building a great buzz for himself. As of late, he announced his upcoming mixtape and dropped a fun visual for his song “We Lit” featuring Jazze Pha. We recent spoke with the rapper for a conversation regarding his music career. Check it out below!
RESPECT.: Hey Mookie. How’s everything going?
Great. I’ve been working hard.
RESPECT.: What is your age and where you from?
I am 30 and I’m from Georgia. Decatur area to be exact.
RESPECT.: Since you’re from Atlanta is there anyone ATL native you look up to?
I look up to the streets. I’m not into looking up to artists at the moment. I look up to the people in the streets. The OG’s and the ones that are rock solid.
RESPECT.: Tell us about your journey before music and what was it like growing up in ATL?
I just came from a low-income background and the slums area of Decatur. I lived like most people that grew up in a low-income home. It was really hard. Mom was out working hard getting money so we can eat.
RESPECT.:What made you want to do music?
Me and my friend started doing it and it gave us a way to link up. At first, we were doing it for fun but then I started taking It serious around the age of 18.
RESPECT.: What made you want to take it serious?
I found out I could get paid. When I found out I could get paid I was like oh yeah, I am all in. I had my moments where I thought things wouldn’t turn out the way I wanted. Sometimes I thought about giving up.
RESPECT.: How has the rap life been treating you so far?
These are the best times of my life. I’m having a really good time right now.
RESPECT.: You’re about to drop a mixtape called No Cap which is hosted by DJ Scream and featuring big names like 21 Savage. How did that come about?
Me and 21 Savage grew up together in the same hood.
RESPECT.: Tell us about your experience shooting the video for “We Lit.”
Crazy video shoot. That was the most fun time I have had in my life.
