When you think of rap, you probably don’t think about South Carolina. But MSC Jay is about to quickly change that. The young athlete turned rapper has set out to put his hometown, St. Helena Island, with a population of about 8k, on the map. The island is the cultural hub of the Gullah/Geechie people, a distinctive culture that began to emerge after enslaved West Africans were forcibly brought to the region.
MSC Jay’s sound is unique. This ain’t Nelly’s country grammar — MSC Jay seamlessly fuses his country roots with the local Geechie culture, effectively pioneering a new sub-genre of rap that he calls “country geechie culture.”
“Mah Dawg” is the ambitious MC’s first single; one where the stark contrasts between his painstakingly deliberate delivery and the upbeat tempo work together in perfect synchronicity to tell the story of life on St. Helena Island’s back roads.
His debut project, Geechie Gospel, will drop January 5th.
