During the weekend I had the chance to catch up with an all around player of the music world that is pushing his brand forward with good vibes. Flosstradamus — or you can call him Lil Uzi Curt — has been blessing the world with Hip-Hop influenced Trap music and now Pop beats…simply put, this talented artist is known for rocking the house. Over the weekend, I caught up with Floss as he was gearing up to do just that (and he delivered sincerely).
During Fool’s Gold’s annual Day Off event in NYC, Flosstradamus discussed many different topics in one of my favorite interviews ever (we thank you at RESPECT. 100 percent), including his new Pop blend of music, his upcoming In Hi-Def tour, his recent merchandise release and what the rest of the year looks like for him. So, let’s get into it:
RESPECT.: What’s up Floss, thanks for meeting with us today. How has the day been treating you so far?
It been good, although I only got 1 hour of sleep last night — well really not even that much, I was in Vegas last night until 4 in the morning, I had a 6am flight here so overall it’s been a busy day.
RESPECT.: As you are gearing up for the In Hi-Def tour, We wanted to know how you went about putting this tour together and picking your locations? What can a first timer of your live show look forward to seeing (including any special guests)?
Alright, well normally I play big festivals and do the big EDM thing, but this time, I just wanted to get back to my roots and just play clubs. So we found a bunch of club spots to play all over the States that I wanted to hit up and basically that’s what I’m doing…it’s just a small run. For the first timer coming to my show, it’s going to be crazy: it’ll be the typical stuff like mosh pits along with some other craziness…also — since I never get to play any House music this time around — I’m going to play House music and some other weird underground stuff. And the only special guest I can say we got right now is DJ Sliink from Jersey. We’re gonna have him come out for a couple dates and we also have some other random people coming out at certain dates too, but most of all you’ll have to come to show and see who we have.
RESPECT.: Recently, you dropped the new single “How You Gon’ Do That” featuring Cara, a song that’s a little different from your normal drops. How did you make this transition, and how was it working with Cara? How did the video concept come together?
So yeah, recently I’ve been making a bunch of random stuff. Normally I do the most turnt up music, but right now I’m trying to make some weird Pop music. I made this tune and this artist named Cara did the vocals on it and it was dope. Usually you have a girl singer on the track and the producer adds someone else’s vocals, but this time we just kept them out and it was good. Really, I’m just trying to make a lot of stuff I’m not used to.
The video concept was an idea that we had where we wanted to spend a whole day with a person and go through a whole relationship in one day. The main idea we wanted was to encapsulate a whole relationship within 24 hours.
RESPECT.: You’ve worked with many different artists throughout your long music career; so far, who’s been your favorite person/group to work with?
I would have to say the most turnt person I’ve had the chance to work with hands down is Lil Jon. Really. He’s pushing 50 or in his 50’s and is more lit than any of these of kids out here right now. So I’m going with Lil Jon, no doubt about it.
RESPECT.: Adding to your growing Floss brand, your merch seems to be doing well, even parallel to your continuing progress as a world-renowned DJ. For you, how important is your merch, and how hands on are you with the designing? What can you tell us about the latest Yin-Yang T-shirt design?
Yeah I do all the design stuff, and to take it back to what you said, the merch thing is hella important. I have such a huge fanbase called ‘Hoodie Nation‘ and they rep all the clothes that I make, and for me it’s just another creative outlet. I get to design all this cool stuff and I get to wear it…it’s super essential. The new shirt we did is an idea [where] we had to mix and match two different T-shirts together and it came out really dope…I’m stoked to see people wearing them.
RESPECT.: Overall, what’s been your favorite Fool’s Gold Day Off moment that you’ve been apart of?
Wow man, I guess I would have to say the Fool’s Gold Day off we did down in Austin, Texas during SXSW. For me honestly, this had to be one of the most lit shows I’ve ever done in my life, I was dripping sweat, the crowd was going crazy, everyone was crowd surfing, A-Trak’s crowd surfed, Sammy Bananas from Fool’s Gold crowd surfed…it was just the craziest party I’ve ever been to.
RESPECT.: Other than the tour, what can we expect to see from Flosstradamus for the rest of 2017 and beyond?
I have a bunch of collabs coming out. I have a song with Diplo coming out soon, and just more music and turning up all over the map. Once I get this tour down, I’m going to focus more on music stuff and then try to get everything released later in the year.
