Confidence effortlessly leaks out Cris Streetz‘ lyrics as he unapologetically topples on topics ranging from success, to women, to the debaucherous evenings he most likely now dabbles in as a part of his rising stardom. These aforementioned evenings are alluded to in the title of his upcoming project, Pregame, which more accurately references the phase of fame Cris is currently in; still biding his time and endlessly discovering and working around his own limits of creativity and skill.
“Ratchet” sees Cris diving in a more trap-influenced atmosphere, tinged with a J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League flair that makes for a both familiar and experimental sound, especially in the instrumentation. “Tonight I’mma need me a ratchet” he says, directly addressing a part of the vice-suffused lifestyle that runs parallel to fame. “Hands Up” defines a more celebratory mindset that also has familiarity to Cris, and the two minute long track is oddly paired with a more gritty beat than “Ratchet.” Production wise, it’s stylistically reminiscent of old school boom-bap beats, with the subject matter also echoing retro-decadence.
The Bronx bred rapper has received praise for his work from a number of veterans in hip-hop and music journalism, including Funkmaster Flex, Pete Rosenberg, and Pete Rock. Stream the two singles below and follow Cris Streetz on Twitter and Instagram.
