A year after the attack at Pulse Nightclub, Orlando prepares to remember the 49 lives that were lost in one of the worst massacres in U.S. history.
Saturday morning saw the “CommUNITY Rainbow Run” at Wadeview Park, where Barbara Poma, the owner of Pulse, was there holding a sign stating that “we will not let hate win,” echoing the sentiments of many of those in Orlando as they look back at the tragedy that happened a year ago. Within the city, there will be 4 services held for family, friends, and members of the community to mourn those who were lost, according to CBS. The first service will be closed to the public, held only for survivors, employees, and local officials at the same time and place that the deaths occurred. The rest appear open for the public to join in their remembrance.
Throughout the weekend, the onePulse Foundation honored the 49 men and women of the LGBT+ community who had died, releasing photos on their social media that also had the phrase “we will not let hate win” on them. Many of the victims belonged to the Latin American community, prompting the creation of a more Spanish-speaking friendly organization such as Proyectos Somos Orlando, according to Ricardo Negrón.
Buddy Dyer, the mayor of Orlando, has also signed a proclamation declaring June 12 to be “Orlando United Day – A Day of Love and Kindness.”
